Far Eastern Zvezda: Why is Rosneft Building a Super Shipyard?

Good news from the Far East. In the Primorsky Territory, the Zvezda shipbuilding complex is being actively implemented, which can become a real locomotive for the development of not only this region, but the whole country. Locals are counting on the creation of new jobs, improved infrastructure and improved quality of life. What is this Far Eastern "Star", and how justified are the hopes placed on it?


Zvezda shipyard is the first large-tonnage shipbuilding complex in our country, the decision to establish which was adopted in 2015. Its scale is impressive. Only the slipway covers an area of ​​12 hectares. The largest crane in Russia is installed on Zvezda; it is capable of lifting 1200 tons. In only six years, the largest dry dock in our country will be launched. All experts agree that launching a super-shipyard in the Primorsky Territory at full capacity will be a turning point in the history of Russian shipbuilding.



The Republic of Korea is a good example. Just a few decades ago, this Asian country was able to build only small fishing boats. South Korean vessels were first assembled from imported components, then the stage of their deep localization was passed. After Seoul relied on shipbuilding, the famous Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard was built, which pulled the development of related industries economics. Today, South Korea is rightfully the leader in world shipbuilding.
Investors at the Zvezda shipyard expect to follow the same path.

At first, we will purchase high-tech development of partners, then we will localize them and will eventually be able to occupy our niche in the shipbuilding market.

The fact is that the oil company is not only a participant in the project, along with Rosneftegaz and Gazprombank, but also one of the main customers of the shipyard under construction. Until 2035, Rosneft plans to purchase 178 vessels from coastal shipbuilders. The company is interested in tankers and gas carriers, as well as offshore special equipment for the development of offshore fields. Work on import substitution in the shipbuilding industry began in 2015, when it became clear that the sanctions impact on our country would only increase.

Zvezda will be able to simultaneously launch several ships with a displacement of 40 thousand tons. Investors are counting on the use of shipyard products in the development of the Northern Sea Route, which is much shorter than the traditional route from Asia to Europe via the Suez Canal. To do this, it will be necessary to build ice-class ships, which, in the presence of a modern icebreaking fleet, will give Russia an undeniable trade advantage. Rosneft even plans to produce icebreakers on its own.
But the matter will not be limited to oilmen’s income alone.

A new city with modern infrastructure is actually being built around the shipyard, and new jobs are being created. Far Eastern youth finally got an incentive not to flee the depressed region, but to actively develop it. In addition, Zvezda will become a driver for related industries of the entire Russian economy - metallurgical, chemical, electronic.

There is no doubt that the appearance in the Far East of such a large-scale shipbuilding project is a big and real step towards restoring the country's economic independence and power.
