Russia will leave Ukraine without “Rokot”

Despite the fact that the leading space powers are actively competing among themselves in the creation of increasingly heavy rockets, much work remains on the share of light launch vehicles. For example, prudent Europeans use them to launch small satellites, due to their relative availability and cost-effectiveness. In this regard, in Roscosmos it was decided to modernize the light rocket Rokot.

Rokot was first launched in 1990. It is a product of modernization of the UR-100N UTTH intercontinental ballistic missile. The length of the "Rokot" is almost 30 meters, the diameter is 2,5 meters. Thanks to such a successful conversion, the Russian Federation received a three-stage light launch vehicle, which is capable of putting more than two tons of payload into orbit. Its developer, the Khrunichev Center, participates in the European joint venture Eurockot Launch Services, which provides launch services in the international market.

However, the Ukrainian authorities created certain problems in the operation of the Rokot. The fact is that technical The stuffing for the rocket was made by NPO Elektropribor in the city of Kharkov. In 2015, Kiev banned the export to the Russian Federation of components for a launch vehicle. It was assumed that the Russian Ministry of Defense could abandon the use of "Rokot". However, now a decision has been made to make a deep modernization of the missile as part of the import substitution program.

“Rokot” is a rather old development, now gyroscopic devices on a different mass and overall scale are already different, and computer equipment is different. Therefore, its modernization is a reasonable thing.

- Vyacheslav Rodin, academician of the cosmonautics of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Honored Designer of Russia, believes.

Redesigned without the use of Ukrainian components, the all-Russian light-class launch vehicle will be called the Rokot-2.
