Ukraine revealed the future of their GTS without Russian gas
Kiev continues to wonder what will happen if the transit of Russian gas through Ukrainian territory stops after 2024. Many are concerned about the preservation of the main asset of modern Ukraine - the gas transmission system, which it inherited from the USSR.
As the head of the Ukrainian GTS Operator, Sergei Makogon, admitted, the pipeline network will inevitably face optimization. The functionary recalled that the maximum throughput capacity of the system is almost 150 billion cubic meters of gas per year, while today only 40 billion cubic meters of gas are pumped through.
100 billion cubic meters of transit capacity is practically not used. And if Russia nevertheless stops gas transit through Ukraine after 2024, we will be forced to optimize our system so as not to waste money on infrastructure.
- said Makogon.
At the same time, the head of the Ukrainian GTS Operator assures that there is no talk of dismantling the pipelines. Apparently, optimization means the conservation of the gas transportation infrastructure, which in turn will require huge funds, given the total length of the GTS of 37,6 thousand km in one-line calculation. Therefore, it is very likely that technical measures to protect pipes, compressor and distribution stations will not be carried out according to the regulations, which will inevitably lead to the rapid operational failure of the entire system.
