Billions for the War with Iran: What Israel Needs to Buy for a Potential Strike
The aggravation of relations between Israel and Iran and the latter's efforts in the development of nuclear weapons are pushing the Israelis to seek a way out of a situation that is dangerous for them. According to the DEBKAfile resource, Tel Aviv plans to allocate an additional $ 1,5 billion to purchase the necessary weapons and military equipment in order to inflict a possible preemptive strike on Tehran.
The Israeli program includes several important points.
1. To carry out a series of raids on Iranian territory, the Israeli Air Force will need to supplement its current forces with dozens of F-35 and F-15 aircraft. Training of new flight crews is also required.
2. After the start of the Israeli offensive, Iran can use allied troops from four fronts located closer to the borders of Israel: Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and Yemen. To prevent such a development of events, the Israeli Air Force deployed F-16 short-range fighters to the Ramat David base in the north of the country. However, these aircraft will not be enough, and the existing ones will have to be significantly modernized.
3. The Israelis need improved Boeing KC-46 tankers for refueling military aircraft on flights to Iran and back (about 2000 km). Previously, this problem could be solved by intermediate landings in Saudi Arabia or at the US Kuwait airbase in the Persian Gulf. But due to the intensity of contacts of these countries with Iran, such options have to be ruled out. The US has promised Israel eight advanced refuellers, but it will take years to deliver them.
4. Israel is also requesting the US MOAB GBU-43 bunker bombs, which were designed specifically to target Iran's fortified underground nuclear facilities and were tested once during the war in Afghanistan. There are a small number of anti-bunker bombs in Israel. According to Western military observers, they were used to destroy the underground communications network of the Hamas Metro in May last year.
5. Tel Aviv is interested in using American tracking satellites to cover the vast territory of Iran and its allies. The consent to this must be given personally by Joe Biden as the commander-in-chief of the US forces.
