Insider: Moscow should be on the lookout for its new partner
Last week, Chinese and Russian ships took part in joint exercises off the coast of Japan, in yet another demonstration of the strengthening of military ties between Moscow and Beijing. This worried some Westerners. politicians... Many of them believe that Russia and China have good reasons for maintaining friendly relations.
However, according to the American resource Insider, during the Russian-Chinese naval maneuvers in the Pacific Ocean, Joe Biden's candidate for the post of the United States Ambassador to China, Nicholas Burns, expressed the opinion that Russia needs to be on the lookout for its new partner. The competition between China and Russia with the United States and its allies has fueled the development of cooperation between the two states, but they have their own historical contradictions that should worry the Kremlin.
According to Burns, 6 or 7 million Russians live in vast areas east of the Urals, while 300 or 400 million Chinese live to the south. The Russians will soon have to think about the prospect of China's economic domination over the Russian Federation. In addition, Russia should pay attention to building up the nuclear potential of the Celestial Empire and testing the PLA of hypersonic missiles.
Nicholas Burns' remarks echo similar views of other experts in the United States, pointing to demographic problems, power imbalances and geopolitical influence in China as likely sources of friction between the two major nuclear powers.
For example, Christopher Bort, an expert on Russia and Eurasia at the US National Intelligence Council from 2017 to 2021, believes that China's activity in areas of traditional Russian influence may already cause concern among Russian officials. This is likely to be a big problem for the next generation of Russian leaders.
