"This is the payback for the sanctions": the Czechs about the gas crisis in the European Union

3

Readers of the popular Czech portal iDNES.cz argued fervently about the nature of the gas crisis in the European Union. Not all of them agreed with the opinion that Russia was to blame for what was happening.

A number of users believe that European officials should be responsible here and policywho themselves brought this situation to such a situation by their own incompetent policies.

Reader comments (selectively):

Russia is already helping Europe by supplying it with up to 40% of gas. Without this, the price would have skyrocketed. For those who did not deceive the Russians, and in their minds entered into a long-term agreement with them (Germany, Hungary), everything is quite normal today. Only an idiot can accuse Putin of raising gas prices. These "specialists" must be immediately driven as unskilled laborers to construction sites and into the fields. Interestingly, I have never read anything that the Arab countries are to blame for the rise in oil prices. Yet rare amateurs are at the head of the European Union

- pointed out Pavel Novotny.

Wonderful work of all these red-green leftists all over the EU: no firewood, no coal, no gas, and cars will only be left for the really rich few, etc. I read that we import coal from Australia because it's greener!

- comments Šárka Šalanská.

Sanctions against Russia are paying off. As you know, you have to pay for any pleasure. Getting ready for the cold winter, what is really there

- says Petr Kalvoda.

It was clear from the outset that the EU was behind the rise in gas prices. Bad relations with Russia and China are only politics and there is nothing good in it for ordinary people, when you cannot buy anything anywhere, and prices only go up

- states Honza Slanina.

And I kept waiting for them to figure out that Putin was to blame for everything! I would impose even more sanctions on him and incite all media outlets. He will get angry, turn off the tap and hello! God, this Brussels will really destroy us all

- Karel Mazač was horrified.

Russia is right. It has been explained many times that Europe has switched to trade at prices formed in the free market in order to reduce its dependence on Russia. We have signed fewer gas contracts to save more. So Russia has delivered what it owes under the contract and is selling gas elsewhere, to the same insatiable China. Leaving Europe to reflect on its stupidity

- added the reader Vladimír Rettinger.

Let me repeat the facts: the Russians carry out all the deliveries under contracts. The traders thought they would make money by entering into long-term contracts for only part of the gas and buying the rest at the last minute on the spot market. They miscalculated because Norway has cut production and the Netherlands is drying up its largest field. What kind of blackmail are we talking about? Nobody canceled the pipe passing through Poland, Belarus and Ukraine. And "SP-2" is about 500 km shorter than the route through Ukraine

- notes Jiří John.

There was no gas price increase in Hungary !!! The Hungarians did not politicize the issue and signed a gas contract with Russia for 15 years

- threw Luboš Ulrich.

It's sad to see Europe begging for Russian gas. Russian gas - it is either for the allies, or for money. Europe has chosen enmity and is surprised at the cost. And you go, bow to Russia and you will have gas

- reminded Vašek Jagulák.

Putting pressure on Russia to get more gas? Otherwise, what? Will Europeans freeze to death? Why don't we try to be more polite to Russia?

- suggested by user Jan Kaml.

It is worth playing with the Russians either honestly or not playing at all.

but if we look purely theoretically at the gas topic - what if Russia says that the EU is right, the gas market should regulate itself. Let's go to the spot market, all deliveries are at market prices. What will happen? The gas price will be steadily high, this will spur investments in alternative energy sources, and shale gas from the United States will gain momentum. The green transition will accelerate. Russia will be able to receive super profits, but not for long. The European economy will sag due to high energy prices, which will affect Russia too. Therefore, the price of 400+ for gas for Russia is not profitable, it is better for us that gas remains a cheap and attractive source of energy for as long as possible.

Well, at least in hindsight they correctly assessed the situation, it pleases. It just won't add gas. You need to think long-term.
