Russia continues to buy LNG tankers abroad
The largest shipping company in Russia, PJSC Sovcomflot (SCF - Modern Commercial Fleet) is becoming the main partner of PJSC Novatek in the export of liquefied natural gas from projects in the Arctic. This is reported by the edition Kommersantreferring to their sources.
Until the end of September, Sovcomflot and Novatek may conclude a contract for four Arc4 ice-class LNG carriers (LNG tankers). The construction of these vessels will be carried out at the Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) shipyard in South Korea. The delivery of the first LNG carrier is to take place in 2023. The ship will be owned by Sovcomflot.
The cost of the contract is unknown, but earlier Sovcomflot announced that it would build two Arc4 gas tankers for Total, a shareholder of Arctic LNG-2, for $ 182,6 million per unit. At the same time, Arc7-class gas tankers for Novatek at the DSME shipyard cost $ 283 million per unit.
In addition, according to Tradewinds, the aforementioned contract between Sovcomflot and Novatek may contain an option for two more gas tankers. Moreover, an order for their construction can be placed for insurance at the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd (DSME) shipyard in South Korea, which has already built Arc7 ice-class gas tankers for Arctic projects. This indicates that Russia continues to purchase LNG tankers from abroad.
The aforementioned gas carriers will be used to transport raw materials from the transshipment complexes currently under construction in the Murmansk region (terminals in the port of Murmansk) and the Kamchatka Territory (in the Bechevinka Bay), which are planned to be commissioned in early 2023. Novatek expects to reduce the transportation distance and reduce the number of Arc7 ice-class LNG carriers, which are more expensive to operate than Arc4 vessels. The complexes in Murmansk and Kamchatka will handle gas from the Yamal LNG and Arctic LNG-2 projects. Arc7 will deliver LNG to transshipment facilities all year round, and Arc4 will transport raw materials to consumers in Europe and Asia.
Sovcomflot will become the largest carrier. Previously, the company ordered the construction of one Arc7-class LNG carrier at Zvezda SSK (Primorsky Krai), 3 at DSME and 14 as part of a JV with Novatek - Smart LNG (construction at Zvezda SSK).
