European carbon tax will hit Russia much harder than sanctions

5

In five years, the European anti-carbon legislation will come into force, according to which the EU will introduce a tax on toxic emissions into the atmosphere. The countries whose industries are the least environmentally friendly will suffer the most from the tax: the USA, China, Great Britain, Brazil, India. The new tax can cause very tangible damage to the Russian the economy.

First of all, the collection is aimed at creating a level playing field, since the "green" standards of Europe are more expensive for the consumers of its goods than the less costly industry in other regions. Also, the declared goal of Brussels is to decarbonize the world economy.

According to analysts' calculations, after the introduction of the European tax, the Russian treasury will lose about $ 2,3 billion each year, which is approximately equal to a 24 percent export duty. The current tax rate per ton of carbon emissions is $ 60, but many in Europe are pushing for a sharp increase. In this case, Russia will incur large losses.

A cross-border carbon tax could have a very beneficial side effect for Brussels: it could hit the Russian economy much harder than any previous Western sanctions

- experts say OilPrice.

Meanwhile, the American resource points to an idea, the implementation of which will allow Russia to get rid of high rates of the European tax. Thanks to the forests that occupy vast territories of the country, the Russian Federation makes a significant contribution to the reduction of the volume of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Over the past 30 years, the area of Russian forests has increased significantly, and this in the future may help Moscow to get Brussels to abolish the anti-carbon tax. However, for this it is necessary to create an appropriate regulatory framework.

Metallurgy remained in only a few countries, including Turkey, Iran, Nigeria, Pakistan, India, where the plants were built by the Union. EU is a net importer of rolled ferrous metals.
The rate of return in this industry is 10 percent.
So who will pay for this green holiday?

All this is written with a pitchfork on the water. Will it turn out that way, the need for carbon products will not fall and the tax will lead to their even greater rise in price, which will deal a blow to European industry. Green energy is still half a myth, and it is heavily subsidized. If there is a crisis, which everyone predicts due to an overabundance of world debts, then the unprofitable energy sector is likely to lose subsidies.
