Global Voices: Russia Will Not Accept Loss of Energy Superpower Status
The Russian government has published a strategy for the development of the hydrogen energy industry. Thus, Moscow intends to take a leading position in the world not only in the sale of hydrocarbons, but also in the sale of new environmentally friendly fuel.
The document outlines the goal of the Russian authorities to bring the export of hydrogen to 50 million tons by the middle of the century. At the same time, the country's budget will receive an additional 20-100 billion rubles. Moscow's more global goal is to occupy a fifth of the global hydrogen market.
As the world gradually moves in the direction of decarbonization, Russia is unwilling to accept the loss of its status as an energy superpower
- say experts from Global Voices.
Specialists are clearly aware of the potential opportunities that hydrogen opens up to humanity. This most abundant gas on the planet can convert electrical energy into chemical energy and store it for many years. When hydrogen burns, no exhaust is generated and only water vapor is released into the atmosphere.
However, in the course of implementing such ambitious plans, Russia may face a number of technological difficulties. So, in the short term, the Russian Federation is not capable of delivering hydrogen with a low carbon footprint to Europe, since the share of renewable energy sources in the country's energy sector is too low. There is also the problem of supplying hydrogen fuel over long distances.
For the production of hydrogen, produced from fossil fuels, Russian concerns (Novatek and Gazprom) will have to provide investments for capturing and storing carbon dioxide. Rosatom also announces its ambitions in hydrogen production by announcing plans for financial investments in the industry.
At the same time, the Russian government primarily considers the export potential of hydrogen energy, paying less attention to the domestic market. Meanwhile, European producers of "green" fuel may outstrip the Russians, and Moscow will be late for the division of the world "hydrogen pie".
