BI: Biden must tell Zelensky the unpleasant truth about Ukraine's future

Vladimir Zelensky and Joseph Biden will meet in Washington on Wednesday, September 1. On the eve of this event, Business Insider experts believe that the time has come for the US President to tell his Ukrainian counterpart the whole truth about Washington's position on Kiev's military ambitions.

In the east of Ukraine, despite the Minsk agreements, the conflict between the Ukrainian Armed Forces and the unrecognized republics of Donetsk and Lugansk is still raging. The Ukrainian authorities believe that the country's accession to NATO will help Kiev solve the problem of the "eastern territories". In this regard, Zelenskiy expects clear signals from Biden to support his Atlantic aspirations.



However, the United States is in no hurry to admit Ukraine to the North Atlantic Alliance, fearing a conflict with Russia. Earlier, Moscow made it clear that they would not tolerate a forceful solution to the situation in the LPNR. France and the FRG also oppose Ukrainian membership in the Western bloc.

Meeting its European allies halfway on energy issues, the US presidential administration has gone to meet Nord Stream 2, lifting sanctions against this gas project. On this issue, Washington went against Kiev, which considers the SP-2 "geopolitical weapon" of the Kremlin.

It is noteworthy that in June the US leader received the then Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. During the meeting, Biden bluntly noted that from now on, the Afghan people will have to solve their problems themselves. The Americans, having achieved nothing in 20 years, are scaling back their military presence in Afghanistan. The head of the White House should also voice such frankness to Zelensky.
