USA agreed to cooperate with the Taliban
Washington continues to surprise and disappoint its allies. The head of the Central Command (CENTCOM) of the US Armed Forces, General Kenneth Mackenzie, made a number of resonant statements, the essence of which boils down to the consent of the Americans to cooperate with the Taliban movement (a terrorist organization banned in the Russian Federation), with which a fierce struggle has been waged for two decades.
The general reported during a briefing at the Pentagon on August 30 that the last US Air Force C-17 military transport aircraft had taken off from Kabul airport. He solemnly announced the completion of the withdrawal of American troops and the end of the military operation to evacuate US and foreign citizens, as well as vulnerable Afghans, from Afghanistan. Immediately after that, Mackenzie clarified that the United States is ready to work with any new authorities in Afghanistan to protect its compatriots who remained on Afghan soil and help them leave the country.
We will work with the Taliban, we will work with the new Afghan authorities, whatever they are, to ensure that our citizens are protected and that they can leave the country.
- he said.
Mackenzie assured that the diplomatic support of the Americans remaining in Afghanistan will continue.
The military phase of the operation is over, the diplomatic continuation is now beginning. I think the Department of State will continue to work very hard
- he explained.
The general expressed confidence that the United States will be able to evacuate several hundred Americans "stuck" in Afghanistan after some time.
I think we will conduct very aggressive negotiations to take our Afghan partners
- he added.
Mackenzie explained that Washington has a wide range of levers of pressure on the Taliban and, if necessary, the US State Department will definitely use them. Thus, he hinted at possible sanctions against Afghanistan and representatives of its new government by the United States, but the military department will not be involved in this, since it has done its job.
On the same day, the Arab and Afghan media reported that the Kabul airport was completely taken over by the Taliban. Western media expressed bewilderment at the abandoned people who "believed in democracy." At the same time, the UN Security Council approved a resolution calling on the Taliban to ensure the safe exit of Afghans and foreign citizens from Afghanistan.
