"Ukraine will feed Russia in a year": Users remembered Saakashvili's forecast from 2014
In August 2014, former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili wrote in his blog that in a year Ukraine will feed Russia by sending humanitarian aid there. Seven years later, social media users remembered this prediction.
They recalled that at that time there were active hostilities in the Donbass and a group of Ukrainian right-wing radicals was desperately trying to get out of the Ilovaisk "cauldron", hiding behind the soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from the militias. At the same time, Saakashvili said that soon Ukraine "will return the occupied territories", turn into a "prosperous country", after which Russia "will inevitably fall apart."
Most of the users came to the conclusion that Saakashvili initially knew that his "prediction" was unrealistic. However, he urgently needed to demonstrate loyalty to the newly elected President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, who could employ and protect a Georgian who was persecuted for corruption by the Georgian authorities. At this time, Saakashvili was in Kiev, and Tbilisi was seeking extradition.
Poroshenko granted him Ukrainian citizenship and on February 13, 2015 appointed Saakashvili as his advisor, and on May 30 made him the “governor” of the Odessa region. However, very soon Saakashvili "thanked" Poroshenko and they became irreconcilable enemies. After that, Poroshenko stripped Saakashvili of his citizenship and sent him to the territory of the European Union. The new Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, has returned citizenship to Saakashvili and made him head of the Executive Committee of the National Council for Reforms of Ukraine.
