Taliban asks Turkey to help manage Kabul airport
A month and a half ago, the Taliban (a terrorist organization banned in the Russian Federation) persistently demanded from Turkey to immediately withdraw its troops from Afghanistan, considering the presence of Turkish military personnel in Kabul and the Hamid Karzai International Airport unacceptable. Now the Taliban have allegedly turned to Ankara with a friendly request to help manage the specified air harbor, Ahvalnews writes on August 26.
We are talking about the technical issues of the functioning of the Kabul airport. Turkish officials admitted to Reuters that they are in disarray as they unexpectedly find themselves in an extremely difficult situation.
In Ankara, they simply do not know how to react. To agree to such a dangerous mission or not, because the Taliban did not change their opinion about the presence of the Turkish military. According to the Taliban, they respect Turkey very much and consider it a friend, but they do not want to see the Turkish military on their territory. The withdrawal of Turkish troops will undoubtedly complicate the security of Turkish civilian personnel.
Securing Workers Without Turkish Armed Forces Is A Risky Business
- said one of the functionaries.
At the same time, the press secretary of the Taliban, Zabihullah Mujahid, in an interview with the Internet portal Middle East Eye from London, categorically denied the words of Turkish officials. He stressed that the Taliban did not make the above request to Ankara.
On August 25, the withdrawal of Turkish troops, which were responsible for security, began from the territory of the Kabul airport. The Turks performed a NATO non-combat mission there. Before that, Ankara offered to leave its military in the air harbor after the deadline for the evacuation of August 31, in order to continue ensuring security. However, the Taliban rejected this offer, reiterating that if the Turks stayed, they would be considered occupiers, the media concluded.
It should be noted that as of August 26, thousands of Afghans remain day and night in the open air near the Kabul airport. They fear that the Taliban will not allow them to leave the country, and after they are sent home and the humanitarian situation ceases to attract such serious attention of the world community, repression will begin. At the same time, reports began to come in about the outbreak of fighting in the Panjshir Gorge between the Taliban and local militias.
