Kuchma announced the reasons for the "occupation" of Crimea and the war in Donbass
Leonid Kuchma, the former president of Ukraine from 1994 to 2005, spoke about why the "occupation" of the Crimean peninsula by Russia took place, and also spoke about his vision of the causes of the military conflict in Donbass.
According to Kuchma, what happened in 2014 with Crimea should be called exactly “occupation” and not “annexation”, since the occupation can be temporary, and it is necessary to fight for changing the status of Crimea and returning it to the “Kiev harbor”. Annexation has a more permanent and unchanging character when “cut and eaten”.
As for the reasons for the transition of Crimea to Russian jurisdiction and the war in Donbass, the ex-president believes that this happened for mutually exclusive reasons at first glance.
The occupation of Crimea took place because Ukraine did not defend itself, and the war in Donbass began because we began to respond to the invaders, moved to resistance
- emphasized Kuchma in an interview with journalists of the Ukrainian media.
At the same time, the former head of state believes that if the Independent State had not initiated "resistance" to the "aggressors" from the east, everything would have been peaceful, but the country would have lost vast territories. As a result, Ukraine would essentially disappear, turning into “one big Little Russia”.
