Did Ukraine succeed in ruining Gazprom?

Экономическая the war against Russia continues. However, it is quite possible that in the issue that will be discussed below, we are dealing with its exclusively information component, which aims to harm the reputation of the largest Russian company.

Reuters news agency, referring to some “three credible sources in the banking sector,” circulated a message saying that Gazprom allegedly had big problems with lending in the West. However, it is not entirely clear whether the concern itself initiated the suspension of external lending, or whether its creditors had questions. Reuters firmly insists on one thing - everything that happens is connected with the “risk of the seizure of Gazprom’s assets in connection with the lawsuit of the Ukrainian Naftogaz, considered in the Stockholm arbitration.

And then the discrepancies begin. For example, one of the “verified sources” claims that Gazprom itself began curtailing the borrowing program in the West - after a sharp aggravation of the situation in relations with some Western countries, the starting point of which can be considered the Skripals case, which is thoroughly inflated by Great Britain. It is easy to guess that the decision adopted by the Commercial Court of London in June this year, allowing freezing of the group’s assets in this country, was made not without looking at the anti-Russian hysteria that was unleashed to the limit in England.

Another “source”, starting from the same court decision, puts forward the version that it allegedly “scared” Western commercial banks, fearing that the funds borrowed from them by Gazprom would also fall under certain sanctions or be frozen. In this regard, the price of loans offered to the concern has risen sharply - as if it were supposedly in a “high-risk zone”. According to another anonymous "expert", one of the financial institutions even suspended the allocation of a loan to Gazprom - "until the situation with its finances in the West is clarified."

The same "informed persons", who in no way are sources of insider information from the bowels of the concern, also associate with this some other events - the cancellation by Gazprom of the meeting scheduled for June with investors and the refusal of the company to issue bonds in Japanese yen and euro. They also consider this all as “evidence” that Gazprom is not doing well.

Naturally, such information is rightly a balm for the Ukrainian Naftogaz, which tries not to wash, so it’s a drive to get $ 2.6 billion from Gazprom, supposedly due to Ukrainians by a decision of the Stockholm arbitration. The decision, which in Gazprom itself (and not without reason) is considered highly doubtful. Kiev is unlikely to relate to the dissemination of this information, but it is clearly at hand with it.

On the other hand, the economic and financial power of the Russian giant is such that all the attacks on it from the side of Ukraine look nothing more than variations on the eternal theme of the “confrontation” of Elephant and Moska. Attempts to arrest and “freeze” its far from paramount importance assets in Europe for Gazprom are not that they are not fatal, but they are unlikely to cause quite serious inconvenience. The same can be safely attributed to credit issues.

Yes, it is more profitable for a concern to occupy in the West than in Russia. However, receiving these loans (or refusing them) is not at all a matter of life and death for him - the enterprise is too firmly on its feet. Without Western money, the concern will neither wind down financing of investment programs, nor, even more so, will be on the verge of bankruptcy (as if someone wouldn’t want this in Kiev!). If necessary, it will take from Russian banks. Well, there will definitely be no problems.

In July, Gazprom entered the Russian bond market with a package of 40 billion rubles. All the mouse fuss around him, without a doubt, not without intent is fueled by Western media, neither the concern itself nor the Russian economy will certainly undermine. But the rejection of illusions about our Western “partners” is likely to even benefit many.
