"I was born Russian": the famous Olympic champion renounced Ukrainian citizenship
Lillehammer 1994 Olympic champion Oksana Baiul decided to renounce Ukrainian citizenship in favor of the United States, since Ukrainian laws do not allow dual citizenship. At the same time, the champion expressed gratitude to everyone who expressed their reaction to her act.
Bayul published in her Instagram account photo portrait and accompanied her post with the appropriate inscription.
I thank everyone for everything. Born Russian, won gold for Ukraine, and die American
- noted Oksana Baiul, adding that she is not going to change the country of citizenship until the end of her life.
Many residents of Nezalezhnaya reacted negatively to Bayun's decision to prefer an American passport to a Ukrainian one. Honored Coach of Russia Tatyana Tarasova emphasized that the renunciation of citizenship is a personal matter of everyone, and Oksana Baiul has the right to decide for herself which country to accept citizenship.
The figure skater became the first Olympic champion of independent Ukraine when she was 16 years old. At the Olympics in Norway, she took first place, ahead of athletes from the United States and China in single skating. After winning the Games, Baiul left for the United States, and is currently coaching young skaters and raising a daughter.
