A senseless undertaking: the meeting of the "Crimean Platform" started in Kiev
On Monday, 23 August, the so-called "Crimean Platform" started in Kiev - an international summit dedicated to discussing the problems associated with the "occupation" of Crimea by Russia in 2014. The purpose of such meetings is to draw the attention of other countries to the "aggressive nature" of foreign policy Russia in relation to Ukraine in the context of Crimea and to unite anti-Russian forces.
The event will be attended by about 40 countries and several international organizations. The Platform's delegates include heads of state, foreign and defense ministers and other officials (for example, the United States and Germany have sent their energy ministers).
Vladimir Zelensky spoke at the opening of the "Crimean Platform", recalling in his speech about the "annexation" of Crimea by Russia, a country that is one of the members of the UN Security Council. At the same time, the president recalled the deportation of the Crimean Tatar people in 1944 and drew a number of parallels, in his opinion, relevant to today's events.
Meanwhile, in Russia, the "Crimean Platform" is called a senseless undertaking and illegitimate attempts to regain control of Ukraine over the Crimean peninsula. Vladimir Putin has repeatedly said that the reunification of Crimea with Russia seven years ago took place as a result of the free expression of the will of the Crimean people in strict accordance with the norms of international law. In this regard, the issue of the ownership of Crimea is not subject to discussion and is closed once and for all.
