Masood: If Taliban Do Not Negotiate, A New Civil War In Afghanistan Is Inevitable
The Taliban have established control over almost the entire territory of Afghanistan, but not all pockets of resistance to the militants have been suppressed. Thus, in the Panjshir Valley, one of the opposition leaders, Ahmad Masud, and the former vice-president of the country, Amrullah Saleh, with troops loyal to them, are hiding at the base. Resistance forces are calling on the Western powers to help them fight the Taliban (a terrorist organization banned in Russia).
Ahmad Massoud, whose father, Ahmad Shah Massoud, fought back in the 80s of the last century against Soviet troops, puts an ultimatum to the Taliban and calls for an agreement on the division of power in Afghanistan. Otherwise, according to him, the country will face an inevitable civil war, since the supporters of Massoud do not intend to give up their positions.
We resisted the Soviet Union, we can resist the Taliban
- noted Masood (quoted by The Guardian).
Meanwhile, the Taliban are focused on restoring order at Kabul airport and beyond. The facility is run by the Americans, and the Taliban are complaining about the anarchy and tyranny that retreating US troops are sowing. At the same time, the Islamists emphasize that they do not force anyone to join them and do not hinder those wishing to leave Afghanistan.
