Turkey will destroy NATO

US-Turkish relations are now in a state of severe crisis. Almost the first time in modern history, they have deteriorated to such an extent that the United States imposed sanctions against Turkey, and Ankara, in turn, froze the accounts of the United States Interior and Justice Ministers.

The situation looks more than strange, given that since the late 1940s. Turkey is the most important geopolitical ally and partner of the United States in Asia Minor. The Turkish armed forces are the second largest after the Americans in the NATO bloc, which makes them one of the most important components of the defense and offensive of the North Atlantic Alliance.

For sixty years, Washington forgave the Turks numerous repressions against the opposition, and shooting executions, and suppressing the Kurdish national movement - all so that Ankara would remain in the orbit of American influence and ensure NATO’s position on the southern approaches to the USSR / Russia. What is the black line connected with between the closest allies?

The formal reason for the introduction of anti-Turkish sanctions by the United States is the story of Pastor Andrew Brunson, who was arrested in Turkey in October 2016 on charges of participating in an anti-Erdogan coup attempt. Ankara does not want to let Brunson go, which makes Washington very angry. However, everyone understands that in reality the causes of the conflict are much deeper. The contradictions between the United States and Turkey have been brewing for a long time and were associated with a major change political layouts in the Middle East and in the world in general.

Before the collapse of the USSR, the United States actively supported Turkey in the fight against the Kurdish national movement. But then in Washington they came to the conclusion that in the changed political situation, the Kurds do not pose any danger to American influence in the region, moreover, they can even be useful. Now the United States actively supports the Syrian Kurds, which Ankara really does not like. After all, Recep Erdogan is afraid of the emergence of sovereign Kurdish states near the Turkish borders like fire. The entry of Turkish troops into Syria, where they began to act against the Kurds, finally angered the United States.

In addition, Washington is very dissatisfied with the excessive independence of Recep Erdogan, who does not want to be satisfied with the role of the American satellite, but claims more serious influence in the Middle East and even in North Africa. It is no coincidence that the Western press has long accused the Turkish president of neo-Ottoman ambitions. Another manifestation of independence that irritates the United States is Erdogan’s contacts with Russia. Erdogan, as if in mockery, declares that Turkey will purchase weapons from those countries from which it sees fit, regardless of American sanctions. This is a direct attack against Washington, which casts doubt on the very possibility of American influence on the behavior of even the closest allies.

Further aggravation of the US-Turkish contradictions is another strong blow to the NATO bloc, which is already in a crisis situation. On the one hand, EU countries are increasingly talking about the formation of a new, alternative to the North Atlantic alliance, military-political structure, and on the other hand we are observing how US relations with Turkey have deteriorated. If the crisis in relations between the two countries continues to develop, then this will inevitably lead to a further weakening of NATO, and maybe the beginning of the process of gradual disintegration of this alliance - a relic from the time of the Soviet-American confrontation.
