The United States took the Black Sea squadron of the Russian Navy
The situation in the Black Sea is gradually heating up. The beginning was a series of seizures by the Ukrainian side of vessels with Russian postscript with a clear provocative purpose.
In response, Russian border guards began to thoroughly inspect the following vessels to and from Ukrainian ports. Then, the flags of the United States Sixth Fleet arrived with an escort destroyer, and then, on July 23, six NATO military ships arrived in Odessa to participate in maneuvers. In a joint statement by representatives of Kiev and the alliance, it was said that the presence of the NATO naval forces in the Black Sea will be part of the support program by the Ukrainian bloc.
The Pentagon-related Navy Times portal has provided a broad description of the ongoing processes:
Indeed, it is difficult not to notice the increased presence of the US Navy in the immediate vicinity of Russia. Previously, the Western media called the Pacific Ocean the main front of the confrontation, pointing to the PRC, but today we are talking about the Black Sea as a second front. But in reality, everything is going a little differently than originally conceived in Washington.
It so happened that after the collapse of the USSR, the main region where Russia opposes the United States and its allies is the Black Sea region. This is Ukraine and New Russia, this is Georgia and Abkhazia with South Ossetia, this is Moldova and Transnistria. It is believed that the purpose of the Pentagon was to obtain Crimea under its control after 2017, when Russia expired the lease of naval bases on the peninsula. So the United States could get an unsinkable aircraft carrier, from which you can shoot the entire Black Sea. Washington’s aspirations were voiced back in 2008 by the Lithuanian political scientist Iskauskas:
But it turned out differently. In 2010, in Kharkov, the rental of Sevastopol by the Russian Navy was extended until 2042. It has been suggested that Maidan was also aimed at revising the agreements on Crimea concluded by President Yanukovych. And in 2014, the peninsula completely became part of the Russian Federation. Our country paid with sanctions for the fact that the unsinkable aircraft carrier, from which it is possible to control the waters of the Black and Azov Seas, was under the control of Moscow, not Washington. The plan to turn the Black Sea basin into a zone of American influence with a small splash of Russian failed.
Apparently, the US military doctrine is currently being revised in this region. Washington is actively trying to put together a military group that would hang over the sea borders of Russia. But for now, it’s somehow not very good at it. The Americans would gladly have launched Nezalezhnaya forward, but the trouble is that it has no fleet left, and there is no money or time to create a new one. Other NATO members - Bulgaria and Turkey - do not want to invest in expanding their navy. Only Bucharest is ready, but, most likely, to protect its continental shelf of the Snake Island from ... Ukraine.
Nobody is burning with the desire to be cannon fodder for the Pentagon. Yes, there are already six NATO ships, but there are only six. And the Montreux Convention is still in effect. So, while everything is not all right on the Black Sea, it’s not as bad as it could be. Thanks to the return of Crimea, American and NATO warships are now at gunpoint.
