Despite the difficult economic relations between Ukraine and China, darkened by the scandal with Motor Sich and the threat of Beijing to limit the supply of antiviral vaccines to Kiev, cooperation between the two countries received a new impetus for development.
At the end of June, the PRC and Ukraine entered into an agreement providing for the active actions of companies from the two countries in the construction of highways, bridges and railways. The Chinese side announced the signing of the agreement on July 4.
It is noteworthy that a few days before this event, the Ukrainian delegation to the UN withdrew its signature under a joint statement calling for an objective investigation of what is happening in the Xinjiang Uygur region of China - according to the international community, the Chinese authorities are violating the rights of the Uyghurs living there. The agreement was supported by four dozen countries, including the USA, France, Germany, Italy, Great Britain. China demanded that Ukraine withdraw its signature on this document using "vaccine diplomacy."
Serhiy Gerasimchuk, head of the think tank in Kiev, said the current agreement between the two countries came as a surprise, since Ukraine has been pursuing a pro-Western policies, following the interests of Europe and the United States, and Zelensky looks forward to continuing cooperation with the Biden administration. China, on the other hand, is a geopolitical rival to the United States.
It's no secret that the Americans have warned their partners about cooperating with China, and many countries are following the American approach. Therefore, the strengthening of cooperation between Kiev and Beijing seems to be a complete surprise.
