Russia is confidently restoring its tractor industry

The Rostselmash company has started the construction of the first large tractor plant in the modern history of Russia. This is an important event for our country, since despite last year's record growth in agricultural exports, it is with tractors that we are not doing well.

So, when compared with other states, the tractor fleet in Russia is in a deplorable state. We have only 1000 machines per 3 hectares of agricultural land, while in Austria - 239, Germany and Spain - 83, and in Belarus - 8. In addition, about 60% of our tractors are outdated both morally and and physically.

Today, the production of wheeled tractors in Russia is carried out by the Minsk Tractor Plant, which has localized production in Cherepovets, and more powerful tracked and wheeled vehicles are produced by the Petersburg Tractor Plant and Rostselmash.

The new facility, which started construction in June, will produce heavy tractors, including tracked vehicles based on the 3000 series, as well as the brand new 1000 series with a classic layout. Later, it is also planned to establish the production of a new generation of tractors with a capacity of 170-250 hp.

It is reported that after commissioning, the enterprise will be able to produce about 3-6 thousand tractors per year. It's not bad, but so many equipment will not cover the domestic needs of the country. Today, domestic farms buy about 10 thousand tractors a year, and this is only to compensate for the deprecated machines.

However, Russia is not alone in Rostselmash. Do not forget about the Petersburg Tractor Plants concern, which this week signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Minsk plant. According to preliminary estimates, the merger of the aforementioned enterprises will not only reduce the cost of production and ensure the growth of sales in the domestic market by up to 30%, but will also increase our exports by 5 times. All this suggests that in Russia for the first time in modern history there has been a good trend towards the restoration of tractor construction.

The main part of imports is mini tractors from China and Japan (from there, as far as I understand, mostly second-hand).

At the same time, the volume of subsidies reimbursing the costs of manufacturing and selling tractor products was reduced from 25% in 2018 to 15% in 2019.

In general, this is more about import substitution, production growth, sales markets for billions of dollars, than about the needs of the villagers. The plant will be built, the state will help, sales will be subsidized, GDP will grow, jobs and wages, and so on. All this is wonderful, but I would like the villagers themselves not to remain strangers at this celebration of life. In order for them to get the very same mini tractors, the Russian ones squeezed out Japanese used ones from the market and, preferably, in terms of a set of characteristics (price, quality), and not just a ban on imports.
Well, I would also like to wish the tractors in the pursuit of profit not to adopt someone else's experience, like this one.
