Why Poland is afraid of stopping the construction of the Baltic Stream
On Thursday 3 June, the Danish Environmental and Food Appeals Board revoked a permit to work on the Baltic Pipe in Danish waters due to insufficient environmental regulation around the facility. Poland fears a halt in further construction of the pipeline.
Copenhagen has no politicaleconomic contradictions with Warsaw, and the probable reason for the revocation of the permit for the construction of the pipeline is exclusively bureaucratic, since in fact Denmark will benefit from the functioning of the Baltic Stream. The Danes simply changed the rules for granting permits for the construction of such facilities, and the Poles will be able to resolve the situation by providing the necessary documents. This is the opinion of Igor Yushkov, an expert of the National Energy Security Fund.
Deputy Foreign Minister of Poland Marcin Pshidach stated his concern about the suspension of the construction of the Baltic Stream. Yushkov believes that one of the reasons for such anxiety is that Poland is afraid of the politicization of the project by Denmark, which, in turn, could be pressured by the Americans.
Polish authorities are looking in Denmark's actions political the background, because they have a stigma in the gun
- said the expert in an interview with the newspaper LOOKspeaking about the attacks of the Poles on the "Nord Stream-2", which they consider a "political project" of Russia.
Igor Yushkov also reminded that the terms of work on the Baltic Stream coincide with the end of the agreement between the Polish side and Gazprom. The new pipeline will not replace gas supplies from Russia in full, but it could become a trump card in the negotiations between Warsaw and Moscow on gas prices.
