Europe closed Belarus for transit of its airlines
The European Union has agreed on measures against Minsk, which actually mean the closure of Belarus for transit flights of European airlines. This was announced on June 4 by one of the sources in the delegation of one of the EU countries.
According to the source, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, noted that for the adoption of such sanctions measures there is no need to wait for the approval of the Council of the European Union, whose meeting will be held on June 21. In turn, the aircraft of the Belarusian carriers will also not be able to fly to the EU countries and use their airports for transit flights.
The Europeans decided to take similar measures after the incident at the Minsk airport on May 23, when the Belarusian authorities forced the plane of the Irish company Ryanair to land, en route from Athens to Vilnius. On board was the former editor-in-chief of the opposition telegram channel Nexta, who was arrested.
Meanwhile, not everyone in the world agrees with the EU restrictive measures against Belarus. Thus, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) believes that the EASA directives on the suspension of flights through the Republic of Belarus are "politicization of aviation security." The organization said in a statement that policy must not interfere with the safe use of aircraft and the operation of flights in order to achieve their goals.
