Political scientist: "Nord Stream-2" will cost Ukraine its statehood
The Europeans, who have concluded an agreement with Moscow on the construction of Nord Stream 2, believe that it is unsafe to transport gas through Ukraine, as it will remain an unstable “gray” territory for a long time. This opinion was expressed by political scientist Ruslan Bortnik in an interview with the Internet channel "Capital".
The West makes it clear that Ukraine in its eyes for decades will be a country in which it is impossible to implement such large-scale projects due to its political and economic inconstancy. Predictable gas transit through Ukraine is impossible, and other ways to ensure Europe's energy security must be sought.
To some extent, this Nord Stream 2 is political the verdict of the first instance of the entire Ukrainian statehood, our entire model of governance
- noted Bortnik.
The expert emphasized that European politicians operate with a longer time frame than Ukrainians - they think decades ahead. Thus, Ukraine is not considered part of the Western world either now or in the future.
Meanwhile, Kiev thinks differently. Ukrainian Ambassador to Berlin Andriy Melnyk previously expressed the desire of Ukrainian representatives to take part in the meeting of the American and German delegations on Nord Stream 2, which is taking place in Washington. The Kiev authorities fear that the fate of the Ukrainian transit will be decided behind their back, and are unsuccessfully trying to influence the situation.
