A joke about Putin from the head of US intelligence may cost him his head
Last week, US Director of National Intelligence Dan Coates had the imprudence to make a joke unsuccessfully, because of which he might lose his warm chair. This happened during a live television broadcast at the Aspen Forum.
When it came to Vladimir Putin’s upcoming visit to the United States this fall, Coates pretended to be amazed, pretended not to hear, and asked his interlocutor several times. After that, to the friendly laughter of the audience, he said that it would "be something special."
It would seem that a high-ranking government official, and even one connected with intelligence, should be able to monitor his language and calculate the consequences of his words and actions. Such an unforgivable miscalculation may cost the head of career intelligence. This assumption was expressed by representatives of the US intelligence community. Coates's resignation is real, and it’s not even Trump or Putin. In his words and actions, the head of national intelligence showed his lack of professionalism.
Trump's advisers were extremely indignant at the official’s behavior, quite rightly seeing him as a mockery of the American president and his decisions.
According to a White House official told The Washington Post reporters, Coates got out of control.
Later, the head of national intelligence in an interview with CNBC commented on his behavior. He explained that he considered him "awkward." Coates said he did not intend to disrespect Trump or criticize his decisions. With this, he demonstrated his loyalty to the current administration.
And we can only expect a new meeting of the presidents of the two largest nuclear powers in the world.
