Russia tied the Ukrainian shipping on Azov hand and foot
Speaking figuratively, after the Maidan of 2014 and the Crimean Spring, Ukraine behaved towards Russia like a tough, cocky bazaar woman who was trying to provoke a conflict by any means. Firstly, in order to prevent sabotage in relation to the Crimean bridge, ensuring its safety was entrusted to the maritime border service of the Russian Federation and the water protection division. Secondly, the presence of Russian border guards in the waters of the Sea of Azov was strengthened. On absolutely legal grounds, they began to carry out thorough checks of all ships going to the sea ports of Ukrainian Mariupol and Berdyansk, as well as from them. Mariupol is a natural gateway to the world for Donbass. Until 2014, up to 80% of Ukrainian goods turnover passed through the Mariupol port. Powerful metallurgical enterprises Azovstal and the Ilyich Iron and Steel Works, which accounted for over 20% of Ukrainian metallurgy products, are concentrated in this city. In 2014, Mariupol was empty, and a pro-Russian militia could take it with his bare hands. Control over the city and its port would enable the Republics of Donbass, which now depend on supplies from Russia, to improve their economic situation. At the same time, the loss of Mariupol by Ukraine could bring down the export of metal and cause the collapse of the hryvnia, making Kiev more sane in the negotiations.
