Russian "Shell-S": an ideal weapon against flocks of enemy drones

The fighting in Syria and Iraq showed the rapidly growing importance of small unmanned aircraft. Drones are used both for reconnaissance and for delivering strikes. It is known that drones of the Russian airborne forces in the Syrian Arab Republic alone made at least 16 thousand sorties. For example, Forpost and Orlan, together with the A-10 long-range radar reconnaissance aircraft, were engaged in transmitting data on enemy targets to Russian bombers.

However, practice has shown the huge potential of compact unmanned aerial vehicles of the helicopter type, designed for bombing from low altitudes. Pioneers in the development of this Technology it turned out to be craftsmen from the Islamic State terrorist group banned in Russia, who, with the help of artisanal UAVs made on their knees, destroyed a huge amount of enemy equipment in Iraq and Syria. The technical achievements of the terrorists were noted by the Chinese, who intend to produce small unmanned bombers on an industrial scale.

In this regard, there is a need to ensure security from small unmanned aircraft, which began to pose a real threat. Syria is acting as an involuntary testing ground for testing such air defense technologies. The Russian military base in Khmeimim was repeatedly attacked by enemy drones. Unmanned aerial vehicles flew in flocks, which represented a serious challenge for the air defense of the expeditionary force. The attacks took place in January, April and May, UAVs flew from the territory controlled by pro-Turkish militants and the so-called "moderate opposition". The raids were successfully repelled.

The last attack occurred on the night of June 30 to July 1. Over ten small drones intended to destroy Russian planes and helicopters based at the airport in Khmeimim. Experts believe that in all cases the drones were shot down, most likely, with the help of the Pantsir-S anti-aircraft missile and gun systems. Locals found a few kilometers from the base fragment of anti-aircraft missiles from the "Shell". This indicates that the complex began to be used to its full potential, since earlier UAVs were interrupted by its cannon fire.

It is known that one "Shell-S" was destroyed by the Israeli army. It is also noted that this was done by a low-flying anti-tank missile, and when the Syrian crew did not bring the complex into combat condition. The capabilities of the "Shell" allow you to defend the airspace at an altitude of 15 kilometers and a radius of 20. Apparently, the Russian air defense missile and cannon system is turning into a universal weapon against the threat of small unmanned aircraft. Is it any wonder that the "Shell" was recognized as an ideal means of dealing with the massive attacks of drones by the American specialized publication National Interest.
