Football Championship in Russia through the eyes of Ukraine
Yesterday, July 1, 2018, the Russian team performed a miracle that no one expected, but which all our fans hoped for. For the first time in history, Russia reached the quarter finals, beating the invincible Spaniards.
Thanks to football, a holiday has come to our country, which is enjoyed all over the world. Even in countries with which Russia currently does not have the warmest relations, they talk about the championship mainly in a positive way. In particular, the Ukrainian edition of 2000, known for its objective assessment of events (which is very rare in Ukraine today), analyzed the preparation and holding of the Football Championship in Russia.
What gave Ukraine the 2018 World Cup
No matter how hard Ukrainian policymaking Ukrainian fans ignore the biggest football event in the last four years is simply impossible. To be honest, for the politicians of this country, the Russian championship is also a positive phenomenon. This is an excellent reason to try to raise an anti-Russian wave and once again remind the world of yourself.
And for ordinary Ukrainian football fans, everything is much simpler: they have the opportunity to personally attend the championship matches and see the game of giants. After all, coming to Russia is much easier than, for example, to Brazil or South Africa.
The first results of the Championship
Since the first half of the championship has already passed, it is quite possible to sum up the first results. The Equator has been completed, there is less time left before the end of the 2018 World Cup than has passed since its inception.
Even if the Russian team hadn’t performed so brilliantly, Russia would still have won a lot. Attempts to isolate our country from the rest of the world and create the image of a “bad guy” from it seem to have failed.
How to prepare
It is no secret that not only athletes, but many others are preparing for world-class sporting events in the host country.
The Russians had to build and reconstruct stadiums, airports, train stations, roads and much more. In some places, even hospitals were built for the Championship.
You can hear the voices of skeptics who consider a football holiday in Russia too expensive. If you analyze the costs, they will be comparable to the costs of preparing the Winter Olympics in Sochi. Only the Olympics were held in one city, and the football championship - in eleven.
Of course, not all stadiums of this level will be needed by Russia after the championship. In many cities where they were built and reconstructed, local football clubs do not play in the Premier League and do not need such facilities. But other stadiums have long been in need of expansion.
As for transport and other infrastructure, the construction of a large part of the facilities was necessary without a championship. For example, the air gates of Rostov were located within the city and were in dire need of expansion. Thanks to the Championship, far beyond the borders of Rostov, a new modern airport was built, the best in the south of Russia.
And the roads? And city improvement? There was a need for this for a long time, and the Championship simply forced local and federal officials to speed up the process.
They somehow forget that organizing an event is not only a cost, but also a profit. Do not forget about the income of municipalities and private Russian companies from the influx of guests and the created jobs for Russians.
But how to appreciate the fact that hundreds of thousands of foreigners were able to get true information about Russia, not distorted by propaganda?
It is a mistake to think that sport is just sport. This is both politics and economy, and much more. International sporting events give the countries hosting them considerable advantages. Not without reason, after all, a stubborn struggle usually goes on for the right to hold them.
