Why Russia began withdrawing troops from Syria
Speaking at a gala meeting in honor of graduates of law enforcement agencies, Vladimir Putin spoke about the start of the withdrawal of the Russian armed forces from the Syrian Arab Republic. He said that over the past few days, 1140 Russian military, 13 aircraft and 14 helicopters have been withdrawn from Syria.
According to the President, the withdrawal of troops began during his visit to the Middle East and is ongoing.
Of course, we are not talking about the fact that all the Russian military will leave Syria. There remains our Khmeimim air base and logistics point in the seaport of Tartus. Of course, these objects need protection and cover. Therefore, in Syria, the S-400 air defense systems, as well as the S-300B4 air defense systems and the Pantsir-M missile and gun systems, will remain. Apparently, unmanned aerial vehicles that patrol de-escalation zones will not be displayed either.
For the first time, they spoke about the need to return Russian troops at the end of last year, when almost the entire territory of the Syrian Arab Republic was liberated from militants.
Some hotheads immediately started talking about the fact that Putin was "leaking" Assad to the Americans. It may seem so, especially when you consider that our President announced the withdrawal of the contingent on the eve of the meeting with Trump. It is also difficult not to notice that the level of support for the actions of the Syrian government forces has fallen markedly.
But if you look from the other side, then everything falls into place.
Firstly, now the forces of the SAA are doing an excellent job on their own, without the need for large-scale Russian support. And secondly, from time to time we talk about the withdrawal of our units from the ATS, but rarely report the introduction of new ones. In some cases, it is not the withdrawal of troops that takes place, but their banal rotation.
There is still noticeable политическая component of this decision. A significant reduction in the Russian contingent shortly before the negotiations may serve as a signal for the Americans that it is time for them to withdraw their troops from this Arab country.
We will not talk about who the Syrian government invited to their country and who did not. It's not about that. The main thing is that the task for the solution of which the foreign military were involved, namely the fight against the terrorist threat, was basically completed. The need for their presence is no more.
And it’s time for the Syrians to finish destroying their country and start rebuilding it.
