Russia will join Japan: a new mega-project has started
So, the new “construction of the century”, which the Russian media have been constantly writing about in recent months, seems to have given a preparatory start. Design and survey work has begun in the Khabarovsk Territory in the areas of future construction of railway approaches to the bridge to Sakhalin Island. The work is designed for three years. After preparing all the necessary documentation, laying of the tracks will begin.
The total cost of the project, which also includes modernization of railways on the island itself, is estimated at more than 600 billion rubles. The allocation of such an astronomical amount from an already scarce state budget immediately raised numerous questions among the population. So is the project cost-effective?
There is no definite answer. Among the advantages, one can note a significant reduction in the cost of goods and services on the island of Sakhalin itself, and, consequently, a decrease in the burden on the wallets of ordinary citizens. But if you run far ahead and imagine that after the bridge to Sakhalin a bridge will be built to Japan, Russia, in addition to economic dividends, will also receive geopolitical.
