What are Russian banks afraid of?

Despite serious information security measures, hackers continue to threaten Russian banks and “gut” their accounts.

The Deputy Chairman of the Bank of Russia Dmitry Skobelkin announced the figures of losses of domestic banks from the actions of virtual crackers. Last 2017, hackers managed to steal 1,15 billion rubles, using the Cobalt Strike software. At least 240 credit organizations became victims of hacker attacks. The voiced figures far from fully reflect the actual losses of Russian banks from the actions of attackers.

Experts say that the number of hacker attacks on Russian and foreign banks is growing. Banks are developing information security mechanisms, but hackers are not far behind and are inventing ever new ways of virtual attacks on credit organizations. Law enforcement agencies have long been sounding the alarm - hacker attacks have a pronounced positive trend. If in 2013 the number of crimes in the field of high of technologies was approximately 11 thousand per year, then in 2016 it increased to 66 thousand per year.

The most vulnerable bank cards of Russians. In 2016, at least 650 million rubles were stolen from them, and in 2017 - about 750 million rubles. But the same SWIFT system is not free from hackers. For example, at the end of 2017, it was through it that the attackers withdrew about $ 1 million from Globex Bank (a VEB subsidiary bank). At the same time, the SWIFT system was not hacked, but hackers managed to penetrate into it and replenish their pockets with it. By the way, this is not only a Russian problem - Taiwanese Far Eastern International Bank hackers working through SWIFT managed to rob $ 60 million.

For a bank, every hacker attack is very expensive, so credit organizations are ready to invest very large amounts in protecting information security. But cybercriminals are distinguished by ingenuity, and the world market of information technologies allows them to find and apply new developments in the field of software that allow emptying bank accounts. For example, in 2017, it was established that software that allows you to steal money from an ATM was found in a free sale on Darknet. Moreover, this software also contained detailed instructions that allowed even a complete dummy to deal with cybercrimes to successfully crack an ATM. Very active hackers use Cobalt Strike, which helps to test the level of cyber defense of banks.

Many attacks are carried out from abroad, which seriously complicates the actions of law enforcement agencies to capture criminals. Russian banks most often attack groups of Russian-speaking citizens who live abroad and are inaccessible to the Russian police. Hackers themselves are actively using all kinds of tricks to put the police on the wrong track. The efforts of the police alone are not enough to combat cybercrime and its consequences. Therefore, the Deputy Chairman of the Bank of Russia said that a special information security department will be created in the structure of the Central Bank.

It can be predicted that in the foreseeable future, technologies for the appropriation of funds from bank accounts will only develop. After all, billions of dollars are at stake and criminal groups will not spare enormous funds to modernize their tools.
