May struck Britain out of the list of world powers

1
According to the British newspaper Financial Times, Theresa May expresses doubts about the status of Britain as a first-rate military power. The British Ministry of Defense is shocked by the demand of the British Prime Minister to submit a justification for defense spending, the newspaper writes.

Thus, the current plans of the Ministry of Defense for the modernization of the armed forces, in anticipation of the upcoming NATO summit in July, are completely disordered.

A spokesman for the British government admitted that at a meeting between Prime Minister Theresa May and Defense Minister Gavin Williams, British defense plans were criticized, but rejected suggestions that the prime minister had proposed a reduction in British military efforts.

It is categorically incorrect to assume that the current status of Britain as a leading military power was somehow questioned.

Said Downing Street spokesman.

Meanwhile, according to sources in the Financial Times, senior officials compared the effect of criticizing the head of government against Gavin Williams with a shock wave from a nuclear explosion.

People just grabbed their heads

- said the source.

Currently, the British Ministry of Defense is hastily drawing up a document that substantiates measures to maintain defense power at the level of first-class military powers, which, in the opinion of the British military, include the United States, Russia, China and France.

Although there is no formal definition of a first-rate military power, the British military believes that having such a status requires national nuclear deterrence forces, as well as a land army, air force and navy, which can be deployed anywhere in the world.

Gavin Williams is currently aiming to push the increase in funding for the armed forces, as next decade, spending on British defense will be reduced by about 20 billion pounds.

Despite the fact that the British military and officials are trying to make a good face with a bad game, it is exactly what they are trying to refute.

During a meeting with the Secretary of Defense, the British Prime Minister said that Gavin Williams needs to review resources and activities aimed at modernizing the armed forces and focus on cyber security in order to increase the country's ability to confront new threats, including Russia.

Also, according to a source in the Financial Times, aware of the details of the meeting between Theresa May and Gavin Williams, which presented plans for the modernization of the armed forces, the prime minister simply asked the head of the defense department:

Are you sure you are going the right way?

It is worth noting that currently the priority announced by the British Prime Minister is health care reform, which, as it was informed this week, will receive additional funding in the amount of 20,5 billion pounds for the period until 2023.

Thus, in the near future, Great Britain is very likely to leave the elite club of the leading military powers of the world, following Germany and Japan, who lost this status after the defeat in World War II.

The irony of the situation is that no one will notice this disappearance, since de facto Britain has long ceased to be a major global player. And in the Kremlin they can even experience some sort of gloating, observing how an empire, over which the sun had not once set, and which was one of Russia's geopolitical opponents, plunges into a quagmire of historical non-existence.
