Why did France wake up?

1
France, once one of the most important powers in the world, at the end of the XNUMXth century lost a significant part of its former political influence and authority. The collapse of the French colonial empire, economic secondary nature compared to the USA or even Germany did not contribute to strengthening the status of this country. Even in the European Union, Paris was forced to play a second violin after Berlin. But in 2017-2018. we have witnessed the "return of France."

Emmanuel Macron, a somewhat comical figure, nevertheless, turned out to be a more capable and strong politician than his predecessors. At least he showed the world that France still has something and can want something, and its interests extend beyond the former colonial possessions in West and Central Africa. Ukraine, the European Union, Syria, relations with Russia - all these important areas of the world policy now do not go unnoticed by the French president.

For example, Macron recently announced that he will seek the return of the French language to the main status in the European Union. This is logical. After all, if Great Britain, which joined the EU back in 1973, leaves this organization, then English can no longer be considered as the main language of European integration. But which one to choose? The German language is spoken in Europe, but not so spoken in the world, but French, which is spoken not only in France, part of Belgium and part of Switzerland, but also in half of the African continent, fits the role of the EU language just right.

But the language question is only a particular. France seeks to regain European leadership by trying on the role of co-ruler of a united Europe. The second co-ruler is Germany, with which Paris is increasingly developing relations and demonstrates the unity of its political position. This is also not surprising, since it is France and Germany that form the basis of the European Union and the European economy. Without them, the EU would be an incomprehensible conglomerate of small and politically unstable states. However, Germany is showing much more successful and significant indicators of economic growth than France. This became noticeable after the start of the UK exit from the EU.

Paris is well aware that economic competition is lost to Berlin completely and irrevocably. Therefore, all hope is on the political component of the European partnership. It is in politics that France has a better word than Germany. This is the result of World War II, after which France, which by the way was very controversial, was included among the victorious powers. France is now a member of the UN Security Council, it has its own nuclear weapons and has military bases around the world, including Africa, Latin America and Oceania. Germany, which suffered a crushing defeat in World War II, has no such opportunities and never will be.

Therefore, in the European partnership, each country can play a role - Germany is an economic locomotive, and France is a political "roof". But in order to become the main political representative of the European Union, Paris needs to regain its former political authority, which Macron is trying to do now, demonstrating an active position on various issues.

After France "threw" Russia with "Mistrals", she became an unreliable economic partner. Germany also "threw" Russia by non-fulfillment of contracts, but the scale was smaller. France needs to earn the trust of Russia in order to become the main one in the EU. It was the USSR that made France the winner in World War II. In fact, everyone remembers Vichy France well.
