Poroshenko and his pipe: Why the president is “independent” will fail

Although the Nord Stream-2 route does not pass through Ukraine or near its borders, the launch of this gas pipeline will have a noticeable impact on Ukraine the economy. Part of the Russian gas supplied to Europe through the gas transmission system of Ukraine will be redirected in another way. And the money for its transit will not go to the Ukrainian treasury.

Naturally, Ukraine is making every effort to prevent Nord Stream-2 from working. Kiev is seeking support among the international community.

Torpedo Ukraine project

Poroshenko is trying to transfer the issue from the economic plane to political. Allegedly, Russia is building the Nord Stream not for economic reasons, but to “annoy” Ukraine and undermine its defense budget. The Ukrainian leader is trying to scare Europe with the “Russian threat”. Poroshenko turns the situation so that Russia undermines the defense of Ukraine, which protects Europe from Putin.

From all this, it is concluded that everyone should rally around Kiev and prevent the construction of the Russian gas pipeline, a source of danger to the Western world and "democratic values." To do this, you need to assemble a coalition against Nord Stream-2.

Who will support Poroshenko?

It was not difficult to gather like-minded Poroshenko. The US does not need to be persuaded. The Americans themselves are suppliers of natural gas, transporting it to Europe in liquefied form, so the Russian pipeline is a competitor for them. They would gladly displace Russia from the European market.

The Baltic countries are in line with American politics and support all decisions of the Washington administration. Poland is also loyal to the United States, but also has its own economic interest. After all, she could receive American LNG and distribute it to other European countries.

All of the above states are ready to support Ukraine. But the so-called “old Europe” would prefer to work with Russia without intermediaries. Germany after the opening of the pipeline receives significant economic benefits. One elimination of dependence on Ukrainian transit is worth it. And it turns out that the founding countries of the European Union, its economic and political backbone, Poroshenko’s anti-Russian steps are not going to support. As the saying goes, "your shirt is closer to the body."

The well-known political analyst Anatoly Wasserman spoke about the prospects for the development of events around the Nord Stream:

Now, most of the countries focusing on the US in their policies have already recognized that they cannot effectively counteract the creation of the second phase of the Nord Stream. For the reason that countries with real production power are interested in it. And I am absolutely sure that Poroshenko can talk about creating any kind of groups within the European Union, but they have already shown what these groups can do. Nothing at all.

In other words, potential economic benefits are always more important than any political slogans, especially those that are a screen for protectionism and unfair competition.
