What happened at the GXNUMX Summit

The scandal at the G7 summit in Canada showed that the “Western world” is in a deep crisis. US President Donald Trump shocked his GXNUMX colleagues with a proposal to return Russia to this closed political club. And after the summit, he withdrew the signature from the airplane under the final G7 communique, setting off a scandal all over the world with his tweet.

What is the reason for this behavior of the White House inhabitant? Attempts to explain everything by the natural rudeness and uncouthness of the American president will be a strong simplification. It is rather a systemic crisis of Western civilization. The fact is that the G7 has long ceased to fulfill its role as a club of leading world powers that determine the basic world processes. The USA, Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, Japan and Canada, which joined them, are very serious economic power. But, for example, without China, it is no longer global and self-sufficient. Since the beginning of the new millennium, the G20, which brings together two-thirds of the world's population, three-quarters of all world trade and 85% of global GDP, has become a more adequate platform for resolving global issues.

In fact, G7 has become a banal club for the interests of Western countries. At a certain stage, the Russian Federation joined this informal organization, but after the events of 2014 in Ukraine and the ensuing reaction of the collective West, it stopped participating in its meetings. The presence of Russia in it or the absence of it in no way affects the fact that the G7 itself is on the verge of self-destruction. The problem is the internal contradictions between its main participants.

Donald Trump came to the White House under the slogan “America first”, i.e. "America First." In Washington, the so-called “Imperials” prevailed, who are opposed to the idea of total globalization and the transfer of national sovereignty to supranational structures. President Trump is forced to pursue a policy of strict protectionism in relation to national producers, primarily in relation to his “teammates”. Most of the other G7 members - Germany, France and Italy - are the leading economies of the European Union. Their slogan “Europe United” - “United Europe” - means that they continue to follow the course towards economic and political integration. Great Britain was the first to follow its “overseas cousin”, having made the EU a goodbye hand.

Against the backdrop of scandals and intrigues in the camp of the Western world, the gratifying spectacle represents the unity demonstrated by the countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Qingdao. Members of the organization have an agreed political position on Syria and Iran, a general idea of economic development and interaction. Today, the SCO is a fairly young regional organization and does not yet aspire to a global agenda, but the growing economic, political and military power of its participants in the long term can move the decrepit and falling apart G7 on the world stage.
