Pattern gap: What foreigners think about Russia

1
There is such a famous joke about an African who lived for several years in Russia and then returned to his homeland. And when asked whether the Russian winter is harsh, he replied:

The one that is green is still nothing, but the white is horror.

In fact, foreigners perceive the Russian summer, the traditions and customs associated with it are not like us. For most of them, Russia is generally little associated with summer. More and more - with cold, with frost. And, faced with hot summer weather, they are surprised. It seems that everyone knows that in our country there are seaside resort towns by the warm sea, but they still imagine that the Russians swim in the ice-hole in winter.

Briton Lindsay Hardy is surprised that once in September it was around +20 ° C. This turned out to be unexpected. But the snow once fell on October 15 - in his country only leaves fall at that time. His compatriot Vicki Hoof believes that the only negative is that the summer is too short. Previously, the British admitted, she generally thought that there was no summer. And it turns out to be even better than in England.

Algerian Mohamed Tahar Asses also associates Russia with the cold. In his homeland, when the weather, by their standards, is not too warm, they say:

Cold as in Siberia.

And even what is connected with summer vacation, many people cannot understand at all. For example, the fact that many Russians do not rest in their summer cottages, but use land to feed them. It seems strange that a Russian man, having worked five days a week, goes out of town for the weekend, where he works for two more days - he digs, watered, plants, weeds, etc. And then he has to return home. On Sunday evening. In traffic jams.

The Italian Ferdinando de Fenza was surprised by the contrasts: often grandmothers sell fruits from the vegetable gardens on the street to feed themselves, and expensive cars drive very close by.

And the Frenchman Mark Ara worries that soon there will be no women planting cucumbers. Therefore, he would like to drive around Russia in the near future and write a book about gardening matters. His other dream is to buy berries from grandmothers' villages and personally make jam.

American Jack Milston, who was lucky with his son to relax in one of the Russian dachas, noted that the days on it pass “slowly and lazily.” While the little son was sleeping in the shade, his father gathered grass, sawed firewood and did other summer work. He believes that the Russian summer cottage is like a paradise, but there is the only difference - for sure, not only soup is eaten in paradise for lunch.

And where there are summer cottages and gardens - there are all kinds of pickles, jams and other home-made products. And, even if you can buy them at the supermarket - but Russian housewives are proud of their own culinary works.

It turns out that Russian pickles are exotic for many foreigners. In the USA, of course, they are also made, but not like in Russia. And our cucumbers eagerly grabbed for gifts.

Dasha Walter from The Question.ru writes that her foreign friends have a favorite dish - cucumbers. Salted or pickled. Yes, there are similar cucumbers in many countries, but everyone says that they have never met tastier than in Russia.

Ana Lucia Gomez da Silva from Brazil is surprised that her Russian grandmother offers her cucumbers, and there, it turns out, they don’t eat raw cucumbers at all.

The Colombian Johan Motta was perplexed by the okroshka. In his opinion, this is a salad drenched in Coca-Cola. And the Vietnamese Pei Xia was struck by jelly and for a long time could not figure out how to drink it. I even wanted to dilute it with water so that it was not too thick.

Even the citizens of many countries are struck by the fact that for the summer in Russian cities they turn off hot water, sometimes at the wrong time. Everything is clear there - either there is hot water supply, or it is not. And then they admire the fact that the Russians climb under a cold shower.

Mushroom picking is another perplexing process. After all, it is much easier, according to foreigners, to buy them in a supermarket than to drag them into the woods, risking running into a fine for an illegal fee. And then - still sorting through, cooking ...

A user with the nickname parsjukin on the Yaplakal website, whose sister is married to a Swiss citizen, recalls that he once walked in this country in a forest park and saw a clearing full of mushrooms, mushrooms. He began to collect them - and then the Swiss was indignant: this is the park! And what to do with these mushrooms? You can’t eat them, as they say. True, the story ended optimistically - the Swiss was treated with fried mushrooms, and he really liked the dish. So much so that next time he himself picked up mushrooms there.

And also, according to guests from other countries, we Russians drink too much tea, even in the summer heat, when the air temperature is + 30 ℃. American Charles Thompson recalls that when he arrived in Russia, there was terrible heat, and there was no air conditioning in the room where he ended up. Yes, he was also offered tea! Hot, by the way! But the owners did not have cold water.

What tea there in the summer! We eat ice cream at minus thirty!
