Spoken: The Germans ganged up on the US ambassador

0
A scandal erupted after US Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell announced his desire to strengthen the position of conservatives throughout Europe. Several political leaders opposed Grenell's presence in the country.

The American diplomat was interviewed by Breitbart London. In addition to talking about conservatives, he said that he especially respects the Austrian chancellor Sebastian Kurz, called him a "rock star of politics" and even invited him to dinner.

The German politicians did not like the statement about the conservatives, since they believe that the diplomat is obliged to take a neutral position in the host country, and not to side with any force.

So, the head of the Left faction Sarah Wagenknecht advocated declaring Grenella persona non grata.

Anyone who, like the American ambassador Richard Grenell, believes that he can decisively decide who rules in Europe, cannot continue to remain in Germany as a diplomat

- she said.

Former head of the Social Democratic Party of Germany Martin Schulz believes that the American ambassador with these statements has shown that he does not adhere to a neutral position, but acts as a representative of the political movement.

What this man does is unprecedented in international diplomacy

- said Schultz. He also sharply opposed Kurtz’s possible visit to his country at the invitation of Grenell.

As for German Chancellor Angela Merkel, she has so far refrained from commenting on what happened, saying only that the Foreign Office will hold a conversation with the American diplomat.

The situation is perceived differently in the US State Department. The official representative of this department, Heather Nauert, referred to the notorious freedom of speech and expressed the opinion that ambassadors have the right to announce their position.

Ambassadors have the right to express their opinion. They are representatives of the White House, be it the current administration or other administrations. And we hear them expressing their opinions. And sometimes people can like or dislike these opinions. There is also freedom of speech

Nauert said during her briefing.

I would only like to know what would happen if the Russian ambassador to the United States directly spoke out in support of any American political force. Even without this, Moscow is credited with interfering in the US presidential election in 2016.

It should also be noted that Grenell is one of the fierce critics of the Nord Stream 2 project. The American representative does not like the very fact of cooperation between Germany and Russia. In an interview with Funke Mediengruppe, he expressed concerns that due to Nord Stream 2 Moscow would have an unnecessarily big impact on Berlin. And this is of concern to Washington.

Radio Sputnik quotes the words of political scientist Leonid Krutakov, who believes that this situation indicates a split between the United States and Germany:

The actions of the American ambassador in Germany are in the spirit of recent events and trends. Let us recall Victoria Nuland, her statements during the Maidan in Kiev about where to "send" Europe. The split between Germany and the USA is obvious

The political scientist added that Germany cannot always be a servant of Washington, and therefore the split will only deepen.
