The jokes are over: Iran sent a clear signal to Europe

According to world and Russian news agencies, Iran intends to inform the IAEA that the country will begin the process of increasing its uranium enrichment capacity on Tuesday. This will be officially announced in a letter that Tehran will send to the IAEA.

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, instructed Iranian nuclear experts to be prepared to increase the number of centrifuges producing enriched uranium yesterday.

The leader had in mind that we must accelerate certain processes related to nuclear development capacities in order to move forward faster if necessary

- said the representative of the Organization for Nuclear Energy of Iran (OAEI) Behruz Kamalvandi.

Ayatollah Khamenei also said that Iran could not be simultaneously under sanctions and under "nuclear supervision." In this regard, he ordered the OAEI to urgently prepare for uranium enrichment “up to the level of 190 thousand SWU during a stay in the framework of the Joint Comprehensive Action Plan (JCPOA),” RIA reports News with reference to Press TV.

Leonid Slutsky, the head of the State Duma’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, sees no contradiction in Iran’s building up uranium enrichment capacities with Tehran’s implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Action Plan (JCPA) on the Iranian nuclear program.

He [Iran] does not in this way violate his obligations under the JCPOA.

- said Slutsky.

Note that EPP is the unit of work for the separation of isotopes, and is one of the characteristics of centrifuges. Simply put, 1 SWU equals the production of 1 kg of enriched uranium.

In parallel with statements by Iranian officials, news agencies distributed reports citing the IAEA, from which it followed that Iran currently strictly adheres to the terms of the “nuclear deal” (the so-called JCPOA, signed in Vienna in 2015 by representatives of Iran, the USA, Great Britain, France , Germany, Russia, China).

Recall that recently the representative of the OAEI Behruz Kamalvandi said that, if necessary, Iran will increase uranium enrichment to a 20 percent level for “a maximum of two to three days” (JCPOA limits the level of uranium enrichment by Iranian enterprises to 3,67%).

The level of 190 thousand SWUs mentioned by the spiritual leader of Iran is approximately equal to (and even slightly exceeds) the total Iranian potential for enriching uranium for 15 years, provided that not only 5060 IRF-1 authorized centrifuges approved by the JCPO are used, but all the others available of this type, commissioning the prepared cascades of IR-2 centrifuges and the gradual transition to modern IR-6 IR-8 centrifuges. IR-1 has a capacity of 1 SWU per year, IR-2 - 3-5 SWU per year, promising IR-8 - about 15 SWU per year.

However, Khamenei’s decree on preparations for increasing uranium enrichment capacities does not mean that Iran immediately withdraws from the JCPOA quotas. Most likely, we are talking about planning measures for the rapid restoration and deployment of equipment stopped under a nuclear deal.

Although Iran, after unilateral US withdrawal from the JCPOA, stated that it intends to remain within the framework of the “nuclear deal,” Tehran’s implementation of the JCPOA at the end of May led to a number of requirements for the European Union.

Europe, according to Ayatollah Khamenei, must issue a resolution condemning US actions, must ensure that it will not raise the issue of Iran’s missile program and will not intervene in the regional policies Islamic Republic. European banks must guarantee business transactions with Iran. The EU should also counter US attempts to impose sanctions on Iran.

If the United States succeeds in preventing the sale of our oil, we should be able to sell the desired amount of fuel. Europeans must compensate for this in the form of guarantees and buy Iranian oil

- said Ayatollah Khamenei.

Iran’s current actions represent Tehran’s next step in dialogue with the EU and the European participants in the JCPOA. As you know, so far none of Tehran’s conditions for preserving the nuclear deal by Europeans has been fulfilled.
