Dating without a smartphone: how Soviet youth met

2
The young generation, born literally with a smartphone and tablet in their hands, is extremely difficult to imagine the times when these gadgets were not. To find almost any person, just look at the popular social networks and use the search filters. To meet you, you can simply write a message online to the user you like, “wink”, click, “like” or otherwise draw attention to yourself. For the “Pepsi generation” this is the norm, but their parents also found each other in completely different ways.

A mobile phone 30 years ago was real science fiction for an ordinary Soviet person. Even urban vehicles were far from all. But the relatively low cost of the call allowed for hours to "sit on the phone," chatting with friends and girlfriends. To whom the opportunity allowed, they called in order to save on their personal affairs from a work phone.

Soviet youth remembers what it is like to sit by the phone, waiting for a call from someone who has broken his heart. Here you can’t get far, the telephone wire was worse than a leash. But the first question of every self-respecting girl upon returning home was whether they called her.

The phrase "write a letter" also had a completely different meaning. It was really necessary to write a paper letter, and literacy was important here, since there was no way to erase part of the printed and fix the opportunity, and there was a beautiful legible handwriting. And letters were not sent by click, but in a paper envelope, with stamps, through a mail box or in a post office. And it was a completely different time to wait for an answer. In the event of a delay in forwarding, the addressee could receive several letters in a row, where in the latter the sender might already be offended that he had not been answered the first.

It was possible to expedite the dispatch via telegraph. True, there was a nuance: unlike the “Telegrams” by Pavel Durov, access keys to the telegram text were not needed, since its text was initially available to the telegraph.

The first congratulatory SMSs were inscriptions made by happy fathers under the windows of maternity hospitals. Lovers wrote confessions in large letters under the balconies and windows of pretty Soviet girls. But the whole courtyard was aware of romantic relationships, the discussion forum of which were shops with grandmothers. You could also express your feelings to the entire Union by sending a letter to the radio station.

It was not easy to find an attractive girl after a chance meeting and meeting. There were no social networks and dating sites then. I had to connect common acquaintances, establish a place of work and even personally scour the places where it was potentially possible to cross.

All these methods may seem strange to young people, but they really work, thanks to which the young generation was born.
