China confidently ahead of Russia in space
In 2014, space launches and the creation of satellites by private companies were allowed in China. Immediately after this, the establishment of several launch vehicle development companies for commercial launches followed, and some of them had already begun to demonstrate early development successes.
One of these companies, called OneSpace, launched the OS-X single-stage research rocket for the first time on May 17, which rose 38,7 kilometers and reached a speed of 5,7 Mach numbers. A 7,2-ton rocket with a solid-fuel engine with a thrust of up to 500 kN flew 273 kilometers. The main objective of such missiles, which are not intended to be launched into orbit, may be conducting research activities while flying along a ballistic trajectory.
OneSpace also has more powerful OS-M rockets. They will already be able to launch small satellites into low Earth orbit. The first launch of the OS-M1 rocket is scheduled for the end of 2018.
As mentioned earlier, OneSpace is far from the only such company in China. Similar developments are being carried out by LinkSpace with their Newline-1 lightweight rocket, or, for example, the i-Space startup, whose Hyperbola-1S rocket made a suborbital flight.
