Trump: We will wipe the DPRK off the face of the earth

1
US President Donald Trump made a statement that various media outlets interpreted differently. Some reported that the US president had threatened North Korean leader Kim Jong-un with the fate of the ousted and brutally murdered leader of the Libyan Jamahiriya, Muammar al-Gaddafi. Others, on the contrary, saw in Trump's words that he did not threaten the stubborn Korean with such a fate.

In fact, there are often conflicting statements from the American president. Either he condemns the war in Syria, then he himself gives the order to throw it with the Tomahawks. Either he advocates cooperation with Russia, then he signs a decree on new sanctions against Moscow. It is not surprising that in the same way he behaves towards Pyongyang, using the “carrot and stick” method.

During his meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at the White House, Trump said:

The Libyan model is not at all the model that we have when we think about North Korea. We devastated Libya, this country was devastated. There was no deal providing for the preservation of Gaddafi

According to him, the United States is ready to provide Kim Jong-un with security guarantees if he agrees to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. At the same time, Trump promised that there would be good relations between Washington and Pyongyang, that the DPRK would become "extremely rich," and the DPRK leader himself would be "very, very happy."

But in this barrel of "honey" there is also a "fly in the ointment." It turns out that the future "happiness" of Kim Jong-un depends on whether it is possible to conclude a nuclear deal. He again recalled the fate of Libya and its leader:

We destroyed this country ... We entered and destroyed it. And we did the same with Iraq ... Now this model is likely to take place if we do not make a deal. But if we make a deal, I think Kim Jong-un will be very, very happy. I really think he will be very happy

It turns out that the President of the United States thus veiledly threatened the People’s Democratic Republic of Korea with the unenviable fate of the Libyan Jamahiriya, and Kim Jong-un - the bitter fate of Gaddafi if Pyongyang refuses the "nuclear deal." Moreover, the situation with Iran shows that Washington itself is ready to refuse the terms of any deal as soon as they cease to suit the owner of the White House.

Trump’s statement came after North Korea’s first deputy foreign minister, Kim Ge Gwan, announced the possibility of revising the country's decision to participate in the summit with the United States if North Korea would be pressured and put forward a strict denuclearization demand. The negotiations, which were supposed to take place on May 16, have already been canceled due to the joint US-South Korean military exercises Max Thunder. Pyongyang considers them a provocation. Under threat is the upcoming meeting of Trump and Kim Jong-un, scheduled for June 12 in Singapore.

Pyongyang's behavior is absolutely understandable. When the only way to defend against the Libyan scenario is to have the country have nuclear weapons, and the negotiating partner is a well-known sharpie, you have to be vigilant.
