Russia's reaction to the US call to blow up the Crimean bridge

The fact that the Crimean bridge caused a negative reaction first from Ukraine, and then from its external patrons, is not surprising. It is clear that such a large infrastructure object, which, moreover, became a vivid symbol of the reunification of Crimea with Russia, could not but cause angry responses. But in the USA they completely “lost their shores” - it came down to calls for violence against Russia.

The Washington Examiner magazine published an aggressive title: "Ukraine Must Blow Putin's Crimean Bridge." Its author Tom Rogan considers the opening of the bridge “an insult to Ukraine as a nation” and not only expresses his indignation, but calls for the destruction of a large-scale facility. In his opinion, in any case, an aggravation of the conflict in the Donbass is inevitable, and the destruction of the Crimean bridge with the help of Ukrainian aviation would be a signal that Kiev does not want to agree to the “theft of the territory”.

The Russian Embassy in the USA protests against this article, calling it a continuation of attempts to foment hostility between Moscow and Kiev. Russian diplomats noted that freedom of speech is not an excuse for calling for a terrorist act and killing people, and Russian legislation provides for criminal prosecution of those who publicly call for violence.

The diplomatic mission demanded that the editorial staff of the publication of the explanations in connection with the release of material:

On May 15, The Washington Examiner published a provocative article by Rogan calling to blow up the Crimean Bridge. Such publications do not fit into any framework of journalistic ethics. We expect The Washington Examiner to explain how this material reflects its editorial policies

Political scientist Sergey Mikheev called “this revolution of schizophrenia”, comparing it with what the Ukrainian authorities practice. He noted that Americans are instructors, and Ukrainians are performers.

Member of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation Franz Klintsevich accused the journal of extremism and called for a criminal case against the author of the material.

The article is clearly of an extremist, terrorist nature. Calls for such actions around the world are serious crimes, and the Investigative Committee of Russia should consider instituting criminal proceedings against the author. Moreover, such calls fall on fertile soil

He said on his Facebook page.

Deputy Head of the State Duma Irina Yarovaya also criticized an article by the American weekly, stressing that this is incitement to commit a terrorist act:

According to the International Convention for the Suppression of Terrorist Bombings, which deals specifically with the protection of infrastructure, this is incitement to commit an international terrorist act, which is a form of complicity

She reminded, adding that the US authorities should hold accountable for this call, otherwise it’s their state policy.

For his part, Alexander Sherin, the first deputy chairman of the State Duma’s defense committee, said that from such publications one gets the feeling that “the world is crazy,” and such rhetoric could have led to a serious conflict 20-25 years ago. According to the parliamentarian, journalists should primarily respond to this.

Meanwhile, Ukraine still adheres to slightly more moderate rhetoric. Kiev is not in a hurry to bomb the bridge, but declares its desire to present Moscow with a bill for the “losses” that supposedly arise from the bridge. Such a proposal was made by Ukrainian Minister of Infrastructure Vladimir Omelyan. The official estimated losses in the amount of 500 million hryvnia per year.

Denis Baturin, a member of the Crimean Public Chamber, responded to this idea on Sputnik Radio:

Russia can be attributed responsibility for any losses, even from meteor shower and so on. But in reality, the Crimean bridge cannot bring any losses to Ukraine - all the losses that it incurs, it inflicts on itself

The Crimean politician added that Ukraine for all the time of its existence could not build an infrastructure object comparable to the Crimean bridge, although it had enough resources at its disposal.

In turn, the presidential spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said that the article in the American press was completely insane, bordering on calls for terrorist acts. He called on US law enforcement to pay attention to this fact.
