Speaking at a meeting of the country's top military leaders, President Vladimir Putin announced the need for a permanent presence in the Mediterranean Sea of ​​Russian warships armed with Caliber missile systems. One such ship should always be on alert, ready to use weapons if necessary.





The constant duty of Russian ships armed with Caliber in the Mediterranean Sea aims to maintain a balance of forces in this region. This strategic goal was set by the command of the Navy of the country in Soviet times. As the post-Soviet Russia strengthened, Moscow began to show an increasing interest in the Mediterranean Sea. Even before the start of the military operation in Syria, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu ordered the formation of an operational navy formation to ensure a Russian presence in the Mediterranean.

The Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Navy plays the main role in protecting Russia's interests in the Mediterranean basin. It was his ships that formed the backbone of the Mediterranean squadron, but the ships of the Baltic and Northern Fleets were seconded to the squadron to help the Black Sea sailors. Not so long ago, the Black Sea Fleet received new Rostov-on-Don and Veliky Novgorod submarines equipped with Caliber-PL. In addition to submarines, “Caliber” can be equipped with any of the frigates heading for duty on the Mediterranean Sea.

Missiles launched from the Veliky Novgorod submarine destroyed terrorist targets in the Syrian province of Deir ez-Zor in the fall of 2017. The Caliber’s firing range on ground targets is 2 thousand kilometers, while during the attacks on terrorist bases in Syria, the Caliber covered a distance of XNUMX kilometers.

But not only the Syrian radical groups are the target for the Caliber of the Mediterranean squadron. The strengthening of the Russian fleet in the Mediterranean Sea is also associated with the need for a prompt response to threats from a probable enemy. In case of conflict, Caliber will be able to cover the British military bases of Akrotiri and Dhekelia in Cyprus, Incirlik base in Turkey, NATO headquarters in Naples, NATO air forces headquarters in Turkish Izmir, NATO headquarters and bases in Greece and Italy.

Thus, the duty of ships with the "Caliber" in the Mediterranean Sea significantly strengthens the militarypolitical Russia's position in this region. Moreover, the United States has recently been actively building up its naval forces in the Eastern Mediterranean. It is interesting that the Americans themselves reacted to the strengthening of the Mediterranean squadron of the Russian Navy with great caution. Admiral Mark Ferguson, commander of the U.S. Navy in Europe, even noted that the dominance of the U.S. Navy in the Mediterranean Sea was in question.
