US bases in Syria prepare to repel attacks

According to the American newspaper The Washington Post, citing its sources in the White House, they fear for the fate of the military base built by the United States in the area of Et-Tanf, the Syrian province of Homs.

This base was created by the United States and the “anti-terrorism coalition” led by them on Syrian soil, contrary to international law, without the consent of the Syrian leadership. Initially, Washington claimed that this base was designed to combat the militants of the Islamic State (a terrorist organization banned in Russia). But now it is used to train terrorists, as well as to strike at forces that are in Syria in accordance with the will of its leadership. In particular, according to the Shiite troops, consisting of Iranians.

Moreover, if an even larger-scale war in the Middle East begins (and Donald Trump’s recent anti-Iranian moves are pushing it to it), the United States will more actively use its base in Al-Tanf against Iran.

In this regard, it is not surprising that the American administration is afraid of possible hostile actions by Iran against this base. The White House even suggests that Iran and other forces that support it could “capture” the facility. (Of course, we should make a reservation: in fact, this would not be a capture, but the liberation of Syrian territory, which is so unceremoniously captured by the United States and its coalition controlled by it).

According to Washington, the possible seizure of the base is connected with Iran’s desire to block land routes to Damascus and the Syrian coast of the Mediterranean Sea.

The Washington Post concludes that the American president should decide whether to continue to use the base at Al-Tanf to pressure Iran or to fulfill his previous promises and finally withdraw troops from Syria.

Unfortunately, after strengthening the "hawk" policy Washington’s regards to Iran, Trump’s announcement of withdrawing from the nuclear deal, intensifying US-Israeli contacts on Syrian and Iranian issues, it is becoming more and more difficult to believe that American troops will indeed be withdrawn from Syria in the foreseeable future. Most likely, the occupied Syrian territories are too “tidbits” to simply abandon them. Especially in light of the fact that they can be useful for anti-Iranian actions.

For Iran, it would indeed be highly desirable if the American base in the land of Syria were somehow eliminated. From the point of view of international law, Tehran has much more reason to liberate the area where it is located than Washington has - to control Mount Tanf and the surrounding territories.

Earlier, the representative of the Russian Ministry of Defense, Major General Igor Konashenkov, said that Al-Tanf and the nearby Rukban refugee camp had turned into a “black hole”, from where Islamic State militants made terrorist attacks against the Syrian army and civilians. And refugees from Rookban camp turned into a "human shield", covering the US base.
