90 days before hitting Iran

May 8, 2018 marked a new stage in relations between Iran and the world community. Donald Trump announced the US’s unilateral withdrawal from the so-called “nuclear deal” with Tehran due to alleged violations of its terms by the Islamic Republic. The reason for the actions of the American president was the speech of the Israeli prime minister, in which he accused Iran of secretly working on the creation of its own nuclear arsenal, contrary to the international agreement.

At the same time, Donald Trump is not embarrassed by the statements of the person responsible for the implementation by Iran of the terms of the IAEA transaction:

Today, the IAEA can confirm that Iran is fulfilling its obligations associated with a nuclear deal.

The breakdown of the "nuclear deal" by Washington has already led to an escalation of hostilities in Syria, where active clashes between the IDF and the Iranian military began. Also, the decision of the White House will have serious economic the consequences both for Tehran and for a number of states that began active cooperation with it after the lifting of part of the sanctions in 2015. According to Sarah Sanders, representing the Donald Trump administration, the sanctions lifted after the conclusion of the “nuclear deal” will be returned in their original form, and new sanctions are also expected to be introduced. In Washington, they described the announced new restrictive measures as "monstrous."

The actions of the United States of America aroused rejection in Moscow, as well as in the European Union, many countries of which began active economic cooperation with Iran. For example, Paris is ready to dispute, within the framework of the World Trade Organization, the unilateral measures of other states that affect the interests of European business, implying the United States. Moreover, France rightly called the States the “economic gendarme of the planet”, pointing to the unacceptability of this situation. In Greece, in this situation, they described Europe as an economic giant and at the same time a political dwarf. Athens stated:

The EU must have a single voice, and a strong voice, both in economic matters and in international policy

In response, the head of the European Council, Tusk, said that by May 17, a single pan-European response to US actions would be ready.

Despite protests from the Old World, Washington began the process of imposing sanctions against the Islamic Republic. The first stage is designed for 90 days and involves restrictive measures on operations with the American currency, Iranian rials, graphite, gold, other precious metals, steel, aluminum, coal. The auto industry of the Islamic Republic, as well as the export of food and Persian carpets to the United States, will be sanctioned. The second stage will mark more serious sanctions against the Iranian energy sector, financial and insurance, shipbuilding, port operators, and operations with oil and oil products will be banned.

Tehran believes that thanks to the position of the European Union, the Islamic Republic will have more room for maneuver. However, experts believe that under the threat of US sanctions, European business will prefer to close its business in Iran, so as not to be ultimately cut off from the US market and its financial sector. Coincidence or not, but the company, owned by the son of the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation, Yuri Chaika Igor, abandoned the project to build a desalination station in Iran. The cost of the project was 180 million dollars. The company explained its decision by the impossibility to purchase the required equipment and components in South Korea.
