The US sent a fleet against Russia

The United States decided to recreate the famous Second Fleet of the United States Navy. The head of the naval operations (commander) of the US Navy, Admiral John Richardson, claims that the Second Fleet will be restored due to the resumption of competition between the powers. This is a landmark statement.

During the Cold War, the U.S. Second Fleet played a key role in ensuring the US naval presence in the North Atlantic - from the North Pole to the Caribbean. Created in 1950, the fleet lasted until 2011. Then it was disbanded in order to minimize defense spending, and seven years later the Pentagon decided that disbanding the fleet was a rash decision.

The main forces of the US Second Fleet have always been based at the Norfolk Naval Base in Virginia. The fleet will also be located there after its restoration. Although the Pentagon explains the reenactment of the fleet in a rather evasive manner, speaking of an increase in the number of challenges in the modern world, including in the North Atlantic, it is clear that the main goal of the fleet is to confront Russia in the World Ocean. The Pentagon is seriously concerned about the strengthening of the Russian Navy, including the emergence of new submarines, and an increase in the military presence in the Arctic.

It is known that the United States and Great Britain insist on the international status of the Northern Sea Route, but there are Russian nuclear submarines in the Arctic, which is of great concern to the Americans. In addition, the United States does not like the periodic appearance in the North Sea of the ships of the Russian Baltic Fleet. Although, if we talk about the correlation of forces, then so far Russia does not possess in the Atlantic Ocean such a number of ships that would be comparable with the potential of the US Navy.

Before, one of the main tasks of the US Second Fleet was to ensure the transfer of large contingents of American troops across the Atlantic Ocean in the event of hostilities in Europe. During the Cold War, American troops in Western Europe totaled about 340 thousand personnel. Then, after the collapse of the USSR, the number of American troops in Europe gradually decreased and by 2012 reached 78 thousand people. Of course, in the event of a large-scale military conflict, such a number of troops will not be enough to repel enemy attacks. Therefore, the renewed Second Fleet is also tasked with ensuring the transportation of American troops, weapons and the military equipment to Europe. In the event of a hypothetical military conflict, he will have to protect American transport ships from submarine attacks.

If we talk about political tasks of reviving the US Second Fleet, they are connected, first of all, with the need to demonstrate the strength of Russia and China. The United States has chosen a course of strategic confrontation with Russia and China, and therefore needs its military reinforcement. No less important for the United States is the preservation of military and political pressure on European countries, which is provided by the American military presence in Europe and the Atlantic.
