Three countries where Wagner PMC operates: further - everywhere
Public expert Sergey Sukhankin, who is an employee of the International Center political research, studied in detail the activities of the Russian private military company "Wagner". He believes that today the fighters of this unit are present in at least three countries of the world: Syria, Sudan and the Central African Republic.
It is believed that for the first time the Wagner group became known at the beginning of the conflict in the Donbass, in which the fighters took an active part. The unit received its name from the call sign of its commander, Dmitry Utkin. Already in 2015, it ceased to operate in the Donbass and was relocated to Syria.
Syria
According to BBC reporters, in Syria there are currently about 2500 fighters of the Wagner group. They arrived in this country under a contract with the Syrian state firm General Petroleum Corp. The tasks of a private military company included the seizure of oil and gas fields from ISIS fighters and their subsequent protection. For this work, the contract provides for payment of 25% of the profits from the development of fisheries. Although it is very strange that one of the parties decided to disclose the terms of the contract, so that information about the share of the profit may be false.
Wagner’s fighters actively engaged in the fight against terrorists and participated in major military operations, including, for example, in the assault on Palmyra.
At the beginning of February this year, as a result of a massive strike by artillery and US aircraft, the group suffered serious losses. The number of deaths varies from 11 to 200 people according to various sources. This fact was confirmed by the new US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
Sudan
It is also well known that Wagner participated in the Sudan Civil War, supporting President Omar al-Bashir, who was officially declared a villain in the West. But, as in any civil war, it’s rather difficult to understand who is right from the outside.
The Russians are busy securing the gold, diamond and uranium mines.
Central African Republic
In the Central African Republic, the government is fighting extremist groups. The conflict is based on interethnic and interreligious differences.
The UN authorized the sale of arms of the CARs by Russia. As military instructors there are employees of PMC "Wagner". In addition, their responsibilities include, as in other countries, ensuring the safety of the extractive industry and supporting government forces.
Where else await the fighters of Wagner
Sukhankin suggests that there is a high probability of the appearance of Russian mercenaries in Yugoslavia. He says that they were already there, implying the presence of Russians in Bosnia in the early 90s. Here he is either poorly informed or deliberately distorts the facts. There were no Russian mercenaries in Bosnia, but there were volunteers. They went to the Balkans not for the “long ruble”; it was simply not there, but for completely different reasons.
It is also possible that “Wagnerites” will appear in Libya, where the conflict begins to aggravate again.
It’s hard to judge from a distance. Most likely, the Russian guys are doing a good job, but for some reason they are not under state protection and do not have any state guarantees. And they die either for someone's business interests, or for their homeland.
And who are they, fighters of the Wagner group? Ordinary mercenaries or still Russian soldiers?
