Will Putin allow Israel to bomb Syria?
On May 9, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will fly to Moscow. The official reason for the visit is participation in the celebrations in honor of Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War. Naturally, the Israeli prime minister will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but they will discuss not only and not so much a festive event. It will be about the situation in the Middle East.
Recently, Israel has been extremely concerned about Iran’s military preparations. Not so long ago, Netanyahu even declared that Israel was ready for war with Iran if the latter continued to increase its presence in Syria, neighboring with Israel. In addition, Israel is extremely interested in squeezing out the Iranian military from Lebanon and Iraq. Indeed, for almost four decades, it has been Iran that has been one of the main patrons and sponsors of radical organizations organizing terrorist attacks against Israel.
Hezbollah and some other structures are based in Syria and enjoy Iranian military and financial support. In this regard, Israel has a very urgent need for constant close cooperation with Russia. As you know, Russia is a close partner of Iran, and in the Syrian conflict both countries are actually on the same side of the barricades. On the other hand, Russia has a special relationship with Israel, which is understandable, given the many millions of people from Russia and the former USSR living in this country. Therefore, Moscow plays the role of a kind of mediator between Israel and Iran.
The Israeli army periodically strikes Syrian territory. The aim of the strikes is the military facilities of the Syrian government forces and radical groups supported by Iran. For example, in April, the Israeli Air Force attacked a military base in the province of Homs, where, in addition to the Syrian army, Russian and Iranian troops were located. Several Iranians died as a result of the strike. And this is far from the only operation of Israel. Naturally, in Tehran such Israeli actions cause deep irritation. In fact, Israel and Iran are now on the verge of the outbreak of hostilities. Since most of the facilities that attack the Israeli Air Force are in the zone of Russian responsibility, Moscow simply cannot but respond to Israeli actions. Most likely, each such strike is coordinated at the level of the military command of Russia and Israel in order to avoid casualties among the Russian military.
On May 7, Israel brought IDF units stationed in the north of the country on high alert. This is due to information about impending Iranian missile attacks on Israeli territory. Against this background, Netanyahu’s visit to Moscow is very important. Russia is completely unprofitable for Israel and Iran to embark on an open confrontation. Another thing is whether the Russian leadership will be able to influence the Iranian and Israeli leaders so that they sit at the negotiating table. If this happens, Russia will receive enormous advantages and increase its credibility in the Middle East and the world as a whole.
