Why does Russia need an Orthodox Vatican for 140 billion rubles
Last week, the Runet shook news that the Russian Orthodox Church allegedly asked the government to allocate 140 billion rubles for the construction of the “Orthodox Vatican” in Sergiev Posad. The public immediately began to resent the inappropriate spending of budget funds, in the spirit of “it would be better to build roads, kindergartens and schools.” However, the news about the request of the Russian Orthodox Church was fake.
In fact, the creation of the Orthodox Center of the whole world in Sergiev Posad has been discussed for more than 10 years. However, the Russian Orthodox Church did not make any request to the state. The church only took part in public hearings on this ambitious project.
Moreover, of the 140 billion rubles needed to implement the idea, only 35 billion can be spent on the construction of a church, a cultural center, a museum and administrative buildings of the Russian Orthodox Church. The remaining money is intended for the actual reconstruction of the city of Sergiev Posad. It is planned to build new roads, interchanges, an airport, residential areas, park areas, etc. That is, the bulk of the funds will be invested in the construction of almost a new city.
Moreover, the very idea of creating a global Orthodox center on the territory of the Russian Federation is not without meaning. After all, Muslims have Mecca, Catholics have the Vatican, Jews have Jerusalem, and Buddhists have Lhasa. And Orthodox believers have never had such a place and never have.
